       upd: yeah it has FM. verrrrry interestingin PSR-300's service manual the exact same GEW8 generator chip (even the p/n is the same) is called AWM&FM Tone Generator, while in RY20 its simply called AWM tone generator. apparently, RY20 can be turned into something resembling RY30 (but with more sounds)...

       i wonder if yamaha cut it down on purpose cos of RY30 or they just got lazy and used an off the shelf awm2+fm chipset. i may try getting a second unit and modding it into oblivion, as it may be a solid ry30 alternative

       @changterhune if u do - get a waveblade + be aware of it having no FM. its good, but you will quickly be tired from its stock waveforms. also be aware that its a nightmare to make patches on it, tons of menu diving, do those using an external sysex editorthe reason i got a tg55 was to push it to the limit & cos it was dirt cheapthe thread is about a more obsucre RY series drum machine though, RY20. way less common than RY30 and RY10 for some reason, most of the time its found in japan

       @changterhune im legit shocked cos of HOW much potential this thing has. fucking hidden fm?? POTENTIAL ABILITY TO LOAD MORE SOUNDS??? 28 channels? a DSP with reverb/delay? this thing has legit potential to be a smaller (almost) RY30 if modded. SEGA did a great job at doing good trax using it (gew8) but for some reason they completely skipped the FM part of it & yamaha hid its existence in ry20's SM for some reason.

       @changterhune to be more correct - you *do* have the access to effects, at the very least. has a separate button for it. but the rest is hidden and unused! insane.

       @changterhune i dont think it supports updates even though it has sysex implemented (and also has thru, very handy), its used for bulk dump (and, possibly, to edit patterns/kits, but i havent seen a driver for ry20 anywhere)also no waveform card slot either - so no extra sounds for ya. but it has LOTS of em, all useable and editable (ptich/pan/decay)it seems like they either wanted RY30 to sell aswell OR just used the first awm2 generator they had and it happened to be a very powerful one
