I’m sharing a bit of my trip this week with my mobile Krita/KDE Neon Linux workstation. Tiny samples from the train, Wikimania conference, and the hotel room! Producing my weekly comic this way was challenging, but I’m really glad it worked out!#krita #kde #train #wikimania #wikimania2026 #paris #painting

@davidrevoy When I see anime being made (in videos) I’m always stuck by how traditional/manual it still is even when digital. Layers, undo, brushes, etc. But still quite traditional.I’m struck by that here as well. Like it’s a digital version of physical painting/drawing.It’s a massive question, but do you a see a way this would change? Ways to make you the artist more powerful/faster. Anything that’s missing from the tools that would be a true force multiplier?(An anime episode is obviously far more “panels” than a comic, so many what would be valuable there would be different.)Also always feel free to dump a link to something you’ve already written/recorded on the subject.

@colognella Unfortunately, I was around only for the Team Challenge Hackathon, tuesday and wednesday (we made https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2026:Team_challenges/Team_03F_Europe ) , I'm already in the train today back to Montauban. 🫤

@yon It's difficult to answer: there is plenty of modern tools to "accelerate" or "automatise" certain steps; but a big part of the fun and passion for drawing is just in the process itself and the full controls it offers to the artist to explore new style and express their soul. Going faster would sounds like speedrunning a Mario level in video game: you get to the end quicker, skip levels, trigger the ending, but it removes whats make playing the game in a regular way an enjoyable journey.

@davidrevoy Thanks for taking time to think about it and answer! It’s a very tricky question, and at what point does artistry die and automation takes its place.Plus as a non artist it’s a whole lot harder to visualize (ha, pun!) than let’s say changes do an IDE since I’m a developer. But I can see older improvements that I understand. Like flood fill or layers. So I’m always kinda curious where a tool such as Krita might go.I also suspect it’s different for let’s say animation. They are awfully overworked, tight deadlines, and it’s not uncommon to see the end product suffer (I’m still amazed at the background artists, do they even sleep?). So lowering stress/work hours could be worth more than the artistry in some ways. One last observation. Eyes used to be very simple in anime. Now we see complex shading and shapes for multiple main characters constantly. I assume they must have a way to “add in” the complex eyes rather than manually draw them each time. Which sparked this whole train of thought :)

@ToonLink Thank you, I couldn’t film long sequences (alone, just two hands, hard to film more than just a couple of stroke). I really have to buy a little tripod to make those mini short video easier 😅

@radmin Oh yes, I understand the trouble for Android and Krita, an eternal beta...My setup here works because of the "thunderbolt USB-C" plug: I can this way use a single USB-C between the drawing-tablet and laptop. In the train, I tested that on the battery, shutting down the built-in display of the laptop. Got a ~3h30 and that was great to do a one sitting long painting session. (1/2)

@radmin (2/2) The real comfort here was to get a full keyboard access at hand, a real drawing-tablet and access to my files, and Linux KDE Neon. The main con of this tablet (I'll make a review in coming weeks) is that I feel it's not properly 'shielded'; it easily get magnetic noise from other device around it. As a small DIY, I'll see if I can isolate it better (inside the case if I find how to open it). Except that, a cool device!

@Juankprada Yes, in January after a trip where I was a bit frustrated with the performance of my Yoga370 on Mini Fantasy Theater. I took a 'Lenovo ThinkBook 14S Yoga' from 2020 on refurbished market (before price hike of hardware in general, got lucky!) And got now this beautiful Intel Core i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz , 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD and Iris Xe Graphics (a classic 16:9 1080p screen). And a thunderbolt USB-C! Krita feels as great as on my workstation on it, and still same format than the 370. Happy.

@davidrevoy Oh that’s a good hardware you got there. I was wondering if the iris Xe graphics were good enough. I’ve been on Nvidia for so long that I am completely unaware of the performance of other gpu brands 🫠

@Juankprada This GPU might be one of the best "Intel integrated" GPU I had from Intel. It's not really praising, it's just all other ones were disasters, and this one is just working and quiet so far 😆 It is smooth for Plasma, Krita and Kdenlive. But I haven't tried any 3D video game or Blender Eeevee rendering with it (I guess it's not really made for that 😅).

@lunareclipse @radmin Ha right, lucky Samsung with EMR styluses! 👍 Glad to know Fedora handle it correctly. My laptop here (Lenovo ThinkBook 14S Yoga) has a built-in AES tech (with its 'toothpick' stylus), but this is not as comfortable as a real EMR: yes, woobly lines, jumping cursor, and sometime very angular curves. Some AES laptop are better designed: well shielded and have low latency (my previous one) this current one, no :)That's why I prefer to connect an external drawing-tablet.
