       Who's keeping track of these old books?  Do you think they're going to make the scans of the book(s) they buy and destroy available? No, no, they are not.  So they're aware that the information they're flooding the world with is unreliable slop (I'm not sure what causes "model collapse", exactly, but I'm guessing the risk is that they train on their own output and overfit, which should tell you something about how the chat bot output is not as universal or expansive as they say it is), but instead of protecting what exists, their answer is: destroy the old to make more slop.We know they did this before, with a bunch of probably off the shelf stuff and that's one thing.  Can't say I give a fuck about a pulped James Patterson.  But now, bulk buying from individual vendors who probably sell rare, highly specific books?  Things that would be interesting to libraries, but the libraries aren't buying them because neoliberals have cut their budgets??The slop filling the internet has long been the digital equivalent of burning the library, but it seems that isn't enough for them and they're now moving to burn the real ones, too.
