@LunaDragofelis @mntmn Linus Torvalds "put his foot down" on anti-AI comments among Linux kernel maintainers, claiming "this is not a social warrior (sic) project."I think it's that.

@tragivictoria @whitequark @ratsnakegames well, this gave me some real hope back then, but it wasn't actually on the lkml (misremembered) https://social.kernel.org/objects/60bcac97-e7c7-4899-a1b6-bb72196cddaf

it doesn't make any sense. linux and the gpl have no technical reason to exist. one could've just bought a copy of unix, right? oh, some people couldn't afford unix, or wanted a bit more control about their own computers? "well that's a you problem" or what. remember the bill gates borg memes in the 1990s? remember "linux is a cancer"? but now it's totally fine to get assimilated by anthropic, which is the new microsoft btw. hello mcfly, anybody home?

if you depend on a secret machine, whose usage you rent from a secret factory, to write your code, you have become the downstream of an oracle that is now in control of you, it has become the new landlord of your skill, and you have also become its little pay piggie

@mntmn it's kinda nice to hear, and i don't mean "rage". there's this whole social hegemony thing about this hype that I don't want to take part in.

@mntmn I agree strongly with this, but I don't think that is what's (currently) happening in the kernel. Linus' email was sent in the context of an AI powered patch review bot.

@mntmn Even for people wanting a unix-like operating system free of charge in the mid-1990s, FreeBSD was an objectively better alternative. But a lot of really good programmers chose Linux for political reasons, and made it better.I still run FreeBSD on my home server. I have considered switching because it would make things easier with docker and systemd, but by now I'm kind of happy I haven't.

@mntmn I'm glad. these days I think it's necessary for tech project leaders to report their "actual feelings", right in the documentation.as a user, I want to know whether or not, one day years down the line, I'll find I was inadvertently supporting a fascist the whole time I was using some project.I'm really suffering these days from constantly needing to switch away from projects when the leaders finally show their cards. "woke" projects are lower maintenance.

@mntmn This is why it's so important to remember that Linux was a toy project that became popular, but was never driven by software freedom concerns.Linus chose the GPL without much thought, never cared about these ideals, and has long been far too accomodating to e.g. Qualcomm.Instead it was (despite their flaws) the GNU project that pushed for free software and software freedom rights, fought against tivoization and for the right to repair, since before Linux even existed.

@mntmn in my software dev career, since 2005 or so, I often heard from fellow devs that "open source is just a business model".at the time I thought this was a cynical and greedy view. and also silly. do these people also think a bird is just a shitty fish?I should have taken it as a warning. the industry would never stop until open source WAS part of the business model. if someone says a bird is just a shitty fish, maybe they intend to flood the world

@mntmn other tech companies leader revealing feelings online: AH FUCK I liked this company! now i have to spend time looking for an alternative because the leader totally suck and makes me angry and sad. i don`t want to support this even if their product is working very well.mnt leader revealing feelings online: hell yeah. this aligns perfectly with why i wanted to invest in the product of this company.

@mntmn what drives me nuts is this essence of "it's just a tool". That's such a limited, reductive, narrow minded etc. view on LLMs that I'm honestly not sure how one can say that in good conscience and with more than 5 minutes of thought.

@reflexI'm not a fan of the text of that particular family of CoCs, and also not a fan of how it came from outside instead of coming from within the kernel development community. But if they adopted it and lived by it, they'd have my respectAnd if they rejected it and lived by "only thing that matters is making the best kernel", they'd also have my respectBut if they bend to whatever is the political climate at any given moment, that's just pathetic.

@mntmn Or maybe.... we are democratising FOSS, exploiting the free and paid tools to:- learn how to do things in a very short time- document and explain tools of the trade- become independent and make our own stuff- securing our infrastructure using low-effort warnings- enjoy making for oneself, or be it à la Heath RobinsonNothing comes close in positive effects of a properly used tool. Lazy, damaging usage is a human foible, not a fault of the landlord or tool vendor.

@mntmn thank goodness for open source models. You can download them, see exactly how they work, understand them, and even re-train them.

@jim__ but as far as i know there are no seriously usable ones with open training data, and it's not what the linux kernel people are using either. but i also think that this whole mess of "needing" a fuzzy llm to find security bugs, which often (still) turn out to be some sort of buffer overflows, is because it's a giant 90s-style C code base that can't be formally verified (afaik)

@mntmn I think training data is always going to be contentious; models benefit from using as much of the internet as possible - but not everyone opted in. Who knows how the best-performing open source models were really trained; possibly distilled from OpenAI’s? But for me they are a whole lot less problematic than closed remote models.
