Started watching Gary Stevenson's documentary "How to get filthy rich". I'm very curious how the wealth inequality situation is going to go, as I have seen an increasing attention to this matter by "the normies" (people who don't research economic or related fields a lot).While cost of living has been an issue for a while, people around me were almost frightened to consider wealth inequality as a potential cause of their issues, as if the very idea that the ultra-wealthy could have a hand in it is heresy of the highest order. So it's interesting to finally see the rise in attention now. Well, let's see how this documentary goes then. It's more UK focused, but money is money so it should relate still.

This rich guy he's interviewing is like "there are so many americans who don't pay tax, why is that? Why should they be allowed to get military protection?". Gary is like "well... they don't make a lot of money, do you think they should pay more tax?" and dude is like "Yes".I hear my wealthier peers always saying "well life isn't fair" to any progressive policy, which as a philosophy is something you can say with little disagreement from most, I suppose. However, when applied to an actual policy action it seems to always result in wealth concentrating further.

Oh boy, he's talking to a very wealthy generational farmer. "Just work hard, we fought to win our properties! Like the people renting our land to farm!" No doubt that fighting involved influencing government policy. So, "work hard for asset owners, but don't work hard at influencing policy like we did, even if the cost of living is rising".

@stefan This dude that he interviewed is a 29th generation inheritor of a ton of farmland that he just rents out to real farmers, he's more an aristocrat than a real farmer. Perhaps way back his family were real farmers.

Finished watching. Reviews say he got steamrolled by the people he interviewed but I didn't see that at all. Many of the people he interviews (in conflict) are just emotional wealthy people with the usual faulty logic. He didn't go long enough I think, so he didn't really have a grand-slam moment against anyone. Also perhaps needed a further analysis of the issue of wealth inequality in the UK. The documentary is only one hour. There are some I know who see the cost of living crisis, but don't think that one of the major contributors to this is the wealthy are attaining more and more of the wealth concentration. I don't think they would be convinced that it is a major issue from this documentary. But I think it came across that the wealthiest elements of society are rather short-sighted and self-serving and indirectly or directly want you to suffer. And they create a reality in their heads where they are morally virtuous. If you deal with them on the regular, you do see this often. They retort with simple worldviews but believe they are correct because they are wealthy.Is the documentary worth watching? Eh, I don't think for most people here, perhaps the regular person who isn't tuned into economic news at all. It does offer a good branch point for researching into capital gains tax vs wealth taxes and such, perhaps. Also Gary clearly isn't a leftist, way more centrist. @xarvos @stefan For sure.Even though I'm aware of the age of many such things in Europe, it's still wild to me to think of a 29th generation land holder. Long ass time to hold the same plot of land.

@stefan @epsi The majority of "farmers" in Western countries are major capitalists that own obscene amounts of land, employ people in very exploitative conditions, and support the most reactionary political projects you can think of. Cottagecore hard working veggie farmers haven't existed in any significant degree since the mid 1800s.

@epsi @stefan Majority in terms of production output at least, I don't know numerically in terms of individual farms. Like all industries really, they centralize, and under capitalism, the only centralizing force is capital.
