       @mrjunge@raru.re i was just talking with friends recently about how one of my local cities, somerville massachusetts, feels like it's trying to put on a performance of its old character as a more diverse and affordable place even while it gentrifies

       @aisling Don't even get me started. Gentrification always seems to go hand in hand with "culture vulture" phenomena like that, where it slowly just erodes the original material basis for the culture of the given area while, having sometimes been motivated by that in the first place, trying to reproduce a facsimile of that culture. If anything if you're gonna gentrify an area, at that point just commit to the bit instead of flailing attempts at emulation..
