       @wolf480pl I agree, the history surrounding this is somewhat murky. From what I can tell, it was only later (The Art of Unix Programming and others) that it was attributed to him.However, there are public memos that discuss his "garden-hose" concept (essentially a pipeline), which you can find online.Whether that quote originally stems from 1964 or not, he certainly seems to have had the idea around then.

       @fribbledom I disagree on the last part because it was very much a product of its time: text was about the only thing computers could handle back then. The input was a typewriter, the output was printout. Today, even text isn’t just text. It’s text in some encoding (hopefully Unicode, but still not guaranteed). And it may have additional markup (HTML, RTF, or something else). It may want to refer to other out-of-line resources, such as images and a unidirectional channel is not great for this.

       @wolf480pl @fribbledom Brian Kernighan: Unix a history and a memoir, page 68. Doug McIlroys idea preceded Unix itself and hung as a printout on Brian Kernighans Office wall for 30 years. The book has a photo of it.
