       @LunaDragofelis @calcius @quixoticgeek in Italy, where they suggest to install this, IC/ICN trains still do have toilets of the "dumping it on the tracks" kind.(Source: I took one daytime IC and one nighttime ICN less than two months ago last time)

       @quixoticgeek Back when I was still on FB, someone wrote a long, technical essay on why paving slabs that double as solar panels are a bad idea. Such negativity about an exciting technology annoyed me at the time, but has been proved correct. 🤷🏻‍♂️Put simply, they generate less power at an exponentially higher cost than conventional solar systems, not least because no known material is both durable and cheap enough for them to be practical. Paving slabs endure 👉🏼 massive👈🏼 amounts of wear and tear!

       @ApostateEnglishmanI remember a few years ago, someone tried to make solar roadways, it didn't go well... The surfaces were too slippery, they got dirty really fast, and repair costs were too highI do like the idea of floating panels in reservoirs and aquaducts@quixoticgeek

       @quixoticgeek "yeah, but what about all the surface car parks in the city"? I'll have the answer tonight, I hope.Meanwhile, there is a law here in France that surface car parks beyond certain size have to have at least 50% of its surface covered in panels. Unluckily, I know only one:(fsck, cartes.app is down, gmaps will have to be)https://www.google.com/maps/@43.2948932,5.4795048,679m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDcwNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

       @quixoticgeek I think I have it:```europe=# select sum(ST_Area(parking.way)) from planet_osm_polygon as parking,   planet_osm_polygon as mrs where mrs.osm_id = -76469 and   parking.way && mrs.way and   parking.amenity = 'parking' and   parking.tags->'parking' = 'surface' and   ST_Area(parking.way) > 5000;        sum         -------------------- 1477439.8694323916```So, all the (tagged) surface parkings in Marseille bigger than 5000m²[1][2] make almost 1.5Mm².1/

       @quixoticgeek [1] not sure the unit is right, I'm 90% confident.[2] 5000 units is the size of the rooftop solar farm on top of my kids' school./end

       @X31Andy @quixoticgeek odd bit of debris. If you are standing on the safe spot in your correct high Vis gear and a train goes past at even 25mph it's frequently like being sandblasted

       @quixoticgeek @peterbrown @Su_G @BillySmith Just because it got funding, doesn't mean it's a success. What really needs to happen to kill these daft projects, is to benchmark the performance of a standard roof install, and have them compete on efficiency. It's one of those ideas that sounds good, but where roof or overhead installs would be more efficient, and less vulnerable to damage. Any attempt to ruggedize the panel for traffic, just reduces efficiency more.

       @latelesley @quixoticgeek @peterbrown @Su_G @BillySmith Two thumbs up for metrics and competing on efficiency, but I'd also want them to compete as a function of impact of power generation on usage and impact of increased usage on power generation.Assume the panels optimized for roadways, rails, and paths are just as efficient panels optimized for roofs / shade.By definition, all of the "put the solar panels in the surfaces things go over" projects have misaligned metrics: the more those areas are used (the more conventionally successful they are), the less useful the solar installation will be (decreased illumination, increased maintenance and replacement costs, increased downtime). If certain types of footwear or tires aren't allowed on certain surfaces, the presence of the panels themselves will discourage usage.By definition, all of the "use the solar panels as a roof/shade" applications align the conventional success metrics with the power generation metrics. Usage doesn't impact power generation, and in the worst case, power generation won't impact usage. In the best case, power generation may increase usage in pedestrian spaces and parking lots due to increased shade and protection from precipitation.

       @quixoticgeek Sidebar: Sounds like the "big ocean theory" of underwater autonomous vehicles.Theory: "It's a big ocean, and X is tiny. What are the chances it will interfere with anything?"Practice: "OMG why does the vehicle keep driving right past the tether? That's the third time this hour!" and "Nooo! The tether just got tangled in something!" and "Why are all the fish schooling around my count-the-fish robot?"Any engineering solution that relies on "but it's only a small thing" should require extensive and exhaustive analysis of precisely how it will function practically and what will happen when *everyone* decides to do it.

       @quixoticgeek and you don't want solar panels placed horizontally, accumulating a maximum of dust , rain and snow without hope of eventual rain at least partially cleaning it.In many latitudes they would be much better off with vertical panels attached to the fences, if they want to deploy next to the railways. Still not a great idea, but at least that would mean fewer access restrictions for maintenance and more sqm of panels per m of rail.

       @quixoticgeek I read all the way through, and I'm very glad to see that aggressive grinding of the rails, and burning piles of thermite to weld rails together, and then grinding all the excess metal off - doesn't appear as a risk to delicate solar panels mounted right next to the rails which get welded by burning thermite. 😱

       @quixoticgeek 15 years ago I was waiting for a co-worker in the carpark and sweating and when he arrived I said "you know, if we put solar panels all over this space it would be cooler and we'd save money" and he goes "Peter, we're an oil company".
