so far i'm not sold on this vibecoding thingtasks like "refactor X to conform to Y shape" are done by coccinelle 100% reliably, every timethe same task done by chatgpt? it misses shit. all the time.

another thing i've noticed is that it will do the bare minimum to meet what you define as success criteria.so if you say "i want to run a linux program on riscv64", it will implement just enough surface to run a hello world program written in assembly.and that technically is a defensible success criteria, but it's not the one a product manager or flesh and bone engineer would consider as a final success criteria for a workstream

what it is good at is splatting obvious code patterns and connecting them together like blocks, which can get you pretty farand as someone who has had multiple RSIs, that is attractive to me, but the problem is, it does not do enough *reliably* for me to consider it trustworthybut i will hold my final judgement until it finishes all of the explorations i've queued up for it

@ariadne ok I had never heard of coccinelle before (or maybe I had but I never looked into it) but omg would that have been so much help when I was working on porting a 15k lines of C into Rust. That ended up being a hodgepodge of very cursed vim macros to do a lot of that mechanical transformation.

@gfaster coccinelle wouldn't be useful for that, it is specifically designed to mutate C programs into other C programs, but have you looked at crust?

@ariadne It wouldn't be useful for the actual translation step, but it definitely could've helped me find the for loops that use their induction variable afterwards and converted them to while loops, which would've saved me a few frustrating bugs.I wasn't aware of crust at the time, but there is basically no more C code actually run anymore in the project at this point, so it's mostly water under the bridge. (although coccinelle for rust looks potentially helpful still?)
