       HAHAHA FUCK SpaceX just launched a nuclear powered satellite.  https://www.space.com/space-exploration/launches-spacecraft/spacex-just-launched-the-1st-ever-nuclear-powered-commercial-satelliteSounds like this particular satellite is tiny and doesn't have a lot of tritium on board but HOLY SHIT this is a bad precedent.

       @sundogplanets Which bad precedent? nanotritum are extremely safe batteries, a lot of modern pacemakers uses it so it can last 20 years on a single charge

       @kumicota @sundogplanets And the protocols for safe disposal of pacemakers are stringent. They do not include “hoping it burns up in the atmosphere somewhere where the resultant ash doesn’t cause any issues”.

       @KimSJ @sundogplanets While I don't like SpaceX for many reasons, what you're saying isn't the problem. Tritium is considered a safeish radioactive gas because it emits lower beta radiation that doesn't gets through the skin, it's the reason that normal people can buy it(in smaller samples) without any restrictions in most countries.Tritium isn't also very reactive, it has a long half-life and the dangers of it are mainly due prolonged ingestion and those betavoltaic batteries usually have only a very small quantity of it.The satellite burning it on atmosphere will do nothing to the environment.This hate to SpaceX because of the tritium battery, will only do more harm for nuclear adoption than SpaceX itself

       @kumicota @sundogplanets I agree, as I acknowledged in a separate post. But anyway, I see damage to the cause of nuclear power as a win: it’s expensive, slow to roll out and creates disposal challenges for both the fuel and the sites.
