@allison @chjara Do you count Quake then? (non-libre assets but libre code)Or only the games derived from it?

@lanodan @chjara quake counts imho, assets are almost always all over the place, but it's the codebase that ultimately matters

@allison @chjara Yeah for me it counts too, specially as it doesn't seems to put limits on platforms.(Quake is Year of gaming on Plan9 approved :D)

@lanodan @chjara for the same reason I also consider emulators licit, the assets are nonfree but the program running them is free

@allison @chjara emulators… I consider them entirely legal, at least as long as they don't bundle in non-free code and quite few times you need stuff like boot roms, which are typically proprietary with little to no libre reimplementations. But I'd still wish you could have libre licensing of what runs in emulators, if only to make stuff like mods legal.

@lanodan @chjara legality is entirely not a concern to me, but from a practical perspective I prefer libre software because of the guarantees it offers

@allison @chjara I take legality as the only difference between libre and not. Otherwise it's just random kinds of source code access or even just binary edits where if you do anything with it either it's kept personal or it's stuck to pirate-lands with little to no cooperation possibilities.

@lanodan @chjara There's a qualitative difference between source code which is designed and maintained to be edited by third parties in a general public and binary artifacts which don't have said guarantees and were never intended to.

@allison @chjara True, and to be clear, I'm not on the side of "everything needs to be libre software".There's few things where I think they need to be (like for gov/bank/… stuff I so wish it would be open protocols), but not everything. And I appreciate when something is libre, but like for example I'm not going on a jihad against the demoscene for typically only sharing carefully made binary builds.

@lanodan @chjara there are gradations to this stuff and it's mainly the last 20 odd years of enclosure which have been catastrophically harmful to the world at large, as opposed to just being a minor annoyance

@lanodan @chjara @SuperDicq trying to convince the rabble of things that really happened is a fools errand, and there's no compelling reason to believe a complete release of information would change this.

@allison @chjara @SuperDicq Yeah.Case in point, the Snowden leaks mostly just served as proof to the ones who already cared while not slowing any of the ongoing crap of putting nearly everything cloud at the hands of the USA.

@SuperDicq @allison @KaiserKitty @chjara Yeah, it's like people who've been watching way too much TV. Although the kind you've described seems even worse. To me it just cooks the brain, like some sort of psychological abuse.

@SuperDicq @lanodan @allison @chjara I just gave up after that. Sadly I think this sort of nihilism is just super common now. People forget there is a difference between being skeptical and being skeptical for skepticals sake. It’s like how a specific journal or researcher will be exposed for fraud so you get hoards of retards swarming “of course scientists and doctors always Lie!!” Then seemingly don’t care that the fraud was exposed by another scientist.

@SuperDicq @allison @KaiserKitty @chjara That plus filter bubbles, so if you try the long obsolete* technique of mixing sources, you risk having fringe shit seen as consensus.*Obsolete because of very few upstream sources, thanks to news agencies + medias copying each others, plus journalists being at multiple ones sometimes even with sockpuppets. And investigative journalism being of course way more expensive to produce.

@SuperDicq @chjara @lanodan http://daifukkat.su/hacks/ketarr/ also at least in the US binary patches have been ruled to be entirely legal and there are many, *many* people who take advantage of this status quo to their own ends

@allison @chjara @SuperDicq @lanodan As far as I am aware, only binary-patches at runtime, in memory (that is lost on a power cycle) has been ruled legal - running a patch that modifies a file in a way that requires copyright permission and then stores to a storage medium, is still prohibited modification and is therefore illegal.

@allison @chjara @Suiseiseki @SuperDicq Yeah but djb has decades of basically everyone disagreeing with him on his weird copyright takes. In fact here he's doing his old shit of entirely mixing up local modifications (which I'd take as legal, at least when no DRM is present but that's also something a bit unclear in some jurisdictions), and *sharing* those modifications (not legal without permission).
