       @dandylover1 Can I ask you one more favor? Since we are seeking ADA II accreditation, a question has arisen regarding the use of straight and curly quotes. I have selected two examples to provide practical examples in this regard.        @gutenberg_org @dandylover1 Straight quotes were invented for mechanical typewriters and kept in 1928 on teleprinters  (5 bit code) and again in 1940s to 1980s for computers ( 7 bit ASCII etc).I use Calibre and convert every ebook from Gutenberg, automatically replacing typewriter quotes with correct quotes and apostrophes (better than Word?), also replacing spaced paragraphs with no space and a 1.3 em indent.Word & Libre Office may get an initial apostrophe wrong, putting an opening single.

       @gutenberg_org @dandylover1 The other issue with auto-conversion of straight quotes (as well as prefix apostrophes being ‘ instead of ’ ) is length/time/angles5' 6" > 5′ 6″ not 5’ 6” (prime & double prime).You may need to zoom text 150% to see the difference clearly on the poor sans font used by default on the website.

       @raymaccarthy @dandylover1 Our concern is how screen readers do handle curly quotes. Are they able to distinguish between straight quotes and curly quotes?

       @gutenberg_org @dandylover1 Most don't do anything with quotes. If they do, then proper quotes are likely to work better as ' and " are not always quotes!This is easy to test on XP to to Win11, Android with default Google reader (which works well in Pocketbook app), iOS, Mac OS, Linux and Kindles with jack sockets. The Kindle PW3 can use a generic USB audio stick & MicroUSB-A adapter. Needs download. Kindles & Kobo with BT work with BT RX to regular speaker/phones or BT earbuds.
