       What We Talk About When We Talk About Malware https://f-droid.org/2026/07/01/adv-malware.html The Android Developer Verifier is a Google service rolling out to Android 8+ devices to confirm apps are tied to verified developer accounts, aiming to reduced malware, scams & stuff like that tricks people installing malware that steals their banking apps login and money etc.  The FLOSS community, including F-Droid, says it consolidates Google's control over it  & creates hurdles for independent developers & 3rd party stores

       The core tension is now:a) Device owners expect to run any software they choose on hardware they paid for. Where is my freedom ?b) Google says less tech savvy users benefit from robust, automated protections with their ADV.But, Google cannot guarantee 100% perfect security either. it is a matter of mitigating risk, not eliminating it. The ongoing issue is deciding exactly where to draw the line between protecting users and preserving their control over their own devices.

       @lanodan @nixCraft as I see it either I can do whatever the fuck I want with my device. That includes full repairability and full software stavck including sources and I have to suffer the consequences of me fucking up or I get a fully closed black box that I don't own and have exactly zero responsibilities and the company who owns that thing has to compensate me for the fallout.But what we get is some intransparent garbage with some parts being free. They sell it tou you. Force utter braindead limitations (Banking Apss) and when they fail you because they stopped support ar do any other corpo asshat thing you are left holding the bag and pay out of pocket for the fallout.

       @TheOneDoc @nixCraft Yeah, it's why I'm fine with feature phones.Because either it works and does what I want with little fuss for quite easily a decade or more similarly to like an hardware calculator or mp3 player, or I can just throw it back where it came from.smartphones meanwhile is like trying to fight the forces of chaos, on pretty much the worst computer form-factor.

       Sorry @nixCraft looks like @nazokiyoubinbou just couldn't follow.The point here is that I do not need a dumb phone and 99% of people who use a "smart" phone use it for payment, bank stuff, eID, 2 FA  etc Maybe sometimes to make calls but that's not the feature that forces those things on everyone.What's needed is legislation that forces banks and others like 'em to run on fully open systems and don't do the handwavey "it's about securty" thing they do right now that force the google shit or the apple crap on people.Because what crapple and google do is security theater and no actual transparent security.Get me now? Good.
