       there's a part of me that's sympathetic to the computer toucher impulse to fix the internet by simply engineering a better one, but it always feels like everyone expects the decentralization aspect of something to be its selling point and that effectively everyone ends up forgetting that like, your users don't care how the software is hosted, and ideally they shouldn't need to think about it. if you want to build a better internet make cool shit people will want to use and that happens to be designed with decentralization in mind. computer touchers always have this shit backwards.

       @nyx once upon a time i would have believed that decentralization tends to lead toward more varied / novel / interesting content (after all, the internet used to be much more decentralized and it was way better back then) but these days i'm inclined to believe that had more to do with the selection bias of the early internet and the general population just craves a bland, hitlerite content regimen (*gestures around at fedi*)

       @rowb1t that's the cruel irony of fedi, it's one of the only examples of a decentralized network you can use today that has real people and a culture behind it, and it turns out that it's still kinda mid because if the only features your product has are that it's an ethical decentralized chungus with wholesome content scopes but still is fundamentally the same as all the bad software, people are going to ultimately default to using it in the same ways, or are going to converge on similar use patterns, and on top of that it's going to select for a very bland userbase.that's why you've gotta make cool shit. just make cool shit dawg.
