I believe the fight for keeping the internet free is more important than ever but also under more threats than ever.And the irony is, centralization is partly to blame: people don't feel like the internet is theirs anymore.But we can't leave it there.We HAVE to act.For our sake, for our kids' sake, for ourselves, for the future.

       @cwebber Yeah… very much in the tired group about it.Like imagine building a ton of stuff for decentralized tech, only to see fellow activists lock themselves into horrors like facebook or instagram where nobody outside can read them, or become highly dependent on youtube all the way to their revenue.Or how much of even non-commercial foss is hard-sticking to GitHub, with similar revenue lock-in in some cases.

       @cwebber I read your post and have written some similar things in the past year or so. the problem is that all the usual internet activism stuff is and always has been at best a temporary stopgap while the same fundamental societal problems that go beyond the internet and motivate these bills being introduced over and over again remain in place. for a couple years it felt like there were these constant bipartisan pushes for surveillance and censorship bills that a lot of people activismed to stop and then they just.. introduced more bills again a few years later and kept doing this while sabotaging the internet on purpose until the war of attrition was won and everyone who used to care gave up and gave in. they'll keep doing this so long as the tech industry exists and functions as effectively contractors for the surveillance state and a wing of the military-industrial complex (which ofc was what the internet was built for in the first place), so long as internet remains a thing that isn't regulated like a public utility despite effectively being one, and at a more pie in the sky scale so long as capitalism continues to exist. there's also the whole matter of most tech workers being comfortable well-paid workers who have a material interest to not rock the boat, aren't organized in things like unions, and usually are also either conveniently apolitical or themselves basically fascists.as far as I'm concerned the internet arrived too soon for where we're at historically and in terms of overall development of political consciousness, and consequently we've not only lost the internet but now it's been twisted into being the best tool the ruling class has ever had to control the masses.
