I am so pissed. Python3-cryptography now requires rust, and given how many modules from PyPi need cryptography, that's baiscally killed a large chunk of Python's portability. Sure, I can get Python-3.14 to build on Solaris 11 Express, but if I can't do something as basic as install fucking certbot..... well done, assholes. your rabid obsession with screaming forwards and giving no fucks about legacy compatibility means that my Python install will basically be hard limited because most things it now can't fucking install. fuck you too.

oh no but no fucking alternative architectures exist ever, do they? not anymore, huh? we're all going to ride off into the fucking glorious future of x64 (boring, generic little-endian pc sludge), ARM (boring, generic little-endian overgrown phones), and RISC-V (boring, generic, little-endian mips with a hat on and a research grant)? Nobody ever uses big-endian POWER7, hmm? or SPARC? or PA-RISC? or Alpha? or anything? Nope. nope, it's all macbooks, cloud VPSes, and RPi knockoffs with RV64 processors!

I'm not even mad at the Python-cryptography folks. unpaid maintainers, I get it. but holy shit, yall. am I one of the last to care about things that aren't a macbook or a Linode? I wonder if I am, sometimes

@freya python-cryptography reminds me that it's that one lib which almost meant no more gentoo on systems without rust, which IIRC at the time was like roughly half of the arches and that's without even counting the variants like -musl, and stuff like prefix.Plus wouldn't be surprised that systems like OpenWRT ends up having to rewrite a bunch of stuff due to this nonsense.

@TheOneDoc and I'm 27. I said in a discord chat that in 20 or 30 years, I might end up being the best Solaris admin, and probably ISV, in the world. not because I'm bryan cantrill level smart, I'm not, but because I might be thje only one left still doing this more than "boot the sun machine, look at how weird CDE is, turn it off"

@freya it's not about thinking it's all about cost and business is all about profit.The only reason ARM is relevant today is that Intel failed to come up with a power efficient x32/AMD64 core in time for the "smart"phone market (I mean ATOM was a very sad joke)Frankly Modern x64/AMD64 CPUs are RISC chips with a x86 layer on top AMD even had a Zen 1 core with an ARM layer at one point. Never made it into production of course.RISC V is relevant because China needs an ISA they can use no matter what and because it saves business some bucks on ARM licences.The more homogenitc the tech the better for business as not much specialized know how is needed.A small work force pool leads to expensive workers and business doesn't like cost.Capitalism is the "Military Standard" (good enough to work for as cheap as we can get it) at scale.
