       @Gargron as far as I can tell, a large majority of people are ok with giving up their privacy, if they think it will reduce crimeand of course, the media constantly tell us how things like CCTV reduce crime, to everyone thinks that giving up their privacy will in fact reduce crime

       @Gargron In denmark, Datastyrelsen (the state office caring for data) released an "altID" app, which can be used as an ID, IRL or online. After creation, data stays on your device, and what clients get is an age or identity verification, and you get to choose what to share. They failed to make it open source, but given it does what the say it does, it at least better than scanning passports etc, I believe. It is derived from an EU model afaik. And I was able to install it on my google-free /e/os fairphone. FWIW.

       @Gargron I am so fed up with ID being passed to external companies with no understanding or validation of what they do with it. One of the main companies used in the UK, Persona, was co-founded by Thiel. How on earth can *any* trust be put in any of his companies. Lots of arguments about the how, but actually I strongly question the why. I simply do not believe the "protect the children" mantra. The goal is worthy, the method is not.

       @Gargron If they need to do age verification, I can't see why it cannot be something similar to iPhones storing your passport (or driving license and even other IDs) and the device basically gives a thumbs up to the person being old enough.Could Apple or Google be hacked or if it's stored locally, is there a chance of it being stolen? Yes, but minimizing the spread of the information helps reduce the risk. Especially since we won't hold companies liable for bad security practices.

       @Gargron Here is in the USA, a completely unelected and unqualified gaggle of Musk bros called DOGE stole our previously most closely guarded private personal data. We have no idea what they did with it. They loaded it on flash drives apparently. We are now compromised in ways we don't even know yet. Our own incompetent, worthless, government of fools are responsible for exposing us to exploitation and criminal acts without our consent. 🤬 ☠️

       @Gargron That and a dystopian future where the government can cut off access to Your Phone and/or Your PC. That also means indirectly all the smart devices that is LINKED to your phone are cutoff too. Banking Apps? Work Apps? Cut off too. You will have nearly NOTHING unless you know enough to get back access.
