       there is no cell service here, no broadband service here.  everyone uses starlink.  the starlink setup in the car has already come in handy, as we've already had to stop and assist someone who was broken down with no signal yesterday.

       @VoxOfGod yes.  I did not say I liked it.  in fact I think describing my need to have a starlink modem in my car to have reliable comms at all is highlighting said policy failure.

       @VoxOfGod like there are plenty of things we could do to address this policy failure, like funding a publicly owned 5G network that the service providers lease access from.

       @VoxOfGod yeah i spent the good part of a decade of my life lobbying for public fibre and 5G infrastructure.  there really is no need for the world's first trillionaire to use satellites to deliver internet.  we just have political leaders who choose that for us, sadly.

       @VoxOfGod oh, i was not even proposing a fully public option, but rather that instead of every carrier paying to build their own infrastructure, they instead run on the same infrastructure and compete on service quality.this drives prices down and also drives innovation in the market by enabling smaller operations to try new things at scale...

       @ariadne Yep, and it deeply messes up my sleep to this day, over ten years after moving to Finland. I have to have insanely good blackout curtains in multiple layers, and even then I lucid dream so much during the summer months.
