So let me get this straight... rsync made a *security release* fixing a bunch of CVEs, it regressed some stuff, people looked at the commit log, saw Claude sign-offs, and started a mob on the sole maintainer?Yeah, this stuff is what gives legitimate AI criticism a bad name.I don't like it, you may not like it either, but when people are throwing LLMs at legacy codebases and finding CVEs by the dozen, and a sole maintainer is trying to keep the house from falling apart... if you're attacking them, you're firing at the wrong person.You know what's a bigger cancer on this world than AI? People incapable of seeing any nuance in situations. And this applies to absolutely everything. I'm absolutely exhausted of extremist takes. From every single side and point of view, in every single debate, AI related and not.You all seriously need to touch grass, and learn to stop being outraged all the time over every single thing in this world.

@lina my nuanced position on this is that if you aren't capable of addressing CVEs in your software that other people rely on without Claude you should quit. quitting is the correct choice in this case, and it is far less damaging than what's currently going on. let someone else do a better job than what you're capable of.

@whitequark My nuanced position is that quitting accomplishes precisely nothing because the lack of manpower isn't going to magically resolve itself, and if you think comparing throwing Claude at a **test suite** to modernize it to what Bun did with the Rust rewrite is reasonable, you need a serious reality check.If you don't like the guy resorting to LLMs to handle the deluge of LLM-generated CVEs, go help him yourself. I'll wait.

@sabik @whitequark The vast, vast, vast majority of the recent changelog co-authored-by Claude is test suite work.But people see a page of commits with "claude" in the author tagline and freak out, completely ignoring that almost everything is "testsuite:" or "ci:".

@lina Imho the biggest danger with AI right now is that it’s going to be locked behind corporate walls.Want to look something up? There will be no sources, and the highest bidder can buy the results. The implications are mind boggling. :(Want to effectively super lint your software for a ton of vulnerabilities etc? Paid service. The attackers will use it, but you will have to pay (every single damn open source library and software will be affected) and you won’t know how the sausage is made.Open source should build LLMs (etc) and figure out ethical source material. Because the biggest issue with AI is socioeconomic. Take the big money out of it and it solves a lot.Imho.

@lina it's so funny that the "nuanced take" demands come without nuance. What's worse than people without nuance is people who pretend to never take a side while actually taking whichever side benefits them in the moment.Any technology that expands the reach of colonialism cannot be used by abolitionists to achieve abolition. No nuance will change this. Using AI = siding with colonialism. "Oh they do other positive things—" cool cool cool, the "poverty bad but we have iPhone so capitalism not bad" defense. Good & bad things don't simply cancel out; moral arithmetics don't exist, & AI hasn't been embedded into the fabric of society yet despite the clear plans to force it in, so there's no "can't get my needs met another way" excuse.

@lina for the record, my interest in openrsync is based on the history of the project and not explicitly on his use of claude. there have just been too many regressions in rsync over the past decade.i also do not agree with harassing tridge, which is why instead of suggesting people do that, i went and started packaging openrsync instead.i figure if it's good enough for apple, it's probably good enough for me.
