@ninja8tyu I have no experience with Nobara but as far as I understand it's just better (tm) Fedora. I wouldn't recommend using Fedora directly since last time I checked the distro doesn't come with video codecs and other non-free/open source stuff that you'll have to install manually, so if you're not familiar with troonix in any way you'll hate being greeted with a half-functioning system after installation. I can attest that Bazzite Just Works (tm) most of the time, and if you want to use your PC mainly for gaming and doing work as a side thing, then the Bazzite-deck gives you the Steam OS experience on whatever system you install it.Do not install Arch, it's mostly a meme. Do not install Ubuntu or its derivatives, the company behind it has lost the plot and you'll come to hate lots of things about it. I wouldn't recommend Pop OS either given that they're in the middle of switching to their new desktop environment and a lot of shit is unstable and will break, steer clear of them until they have a stable system. Don't install niche distros that barely anybody uses, you'll regret it.

@ninja8tyu like literally any distro that is "centric" to "gaming" and other shit just ships with the drivers/wine youd install on any other machinrand all of the creative apps suck on itvideo, image, audio, its all asslike it is genuinely easier to edit videos from the command line than use any gui app

@ninja8tyu I've used a variety of distros: Debian, Devuan, Arch, Artix, KDE Neon, Gentoo, Fedora Sway Atomic, Bazzite, Mint, OpenBSD (not Linux, but including it for completeness), Guix, etc.Everyone's criteria for choosing a distro is different, but there are a few different parameters that may be important to you:- Ease of setup / maintenance (some people enjoy tinkering (Gentoo users), whereas others see it as a chore)- Elegance of the architecture- Support for the programs you use- Security considerations- Ethics of the team/project, etc.From your post, my sense is that you'd prefer to run something that 'Just Works' and doesn't break, rather than spend a ton of time tinkering. To that end, the atomic distributions (like Bazzite, Kinoite, etc.) are nice, because they make it really easy to roll back to prior versions of your system if something fucks up.Another major schism in the Linux world is being pro- or anti-Systemd. Systemd is an init system and set of core utils that are kind of bloated and monolithic. Critics also highlight that it provides a large attack surface for security vulnerabilities. From my distro list, you can see that I've mostly avoided it for philosophical reasons, but I will say that my current systems have it, and it generally does seem to make things easier.On the ethics side: Fedora is gay and retarded. Bazzite is gay, trooned out, and retarded. Even the "based" Linux distros are gay at their core because the kernel itself is built by gay retards. You can't avoid that dimension unless you move to BSD land--but they generally don't support discrete graphics cards as well, and would force you to compile more of your own programs.I think for your use case, Bazzite is a good fit. It's basically Kinoite (Fedora Atomic running the KDE DE, plus a bunch of tooling around NVIDIA graphics cards and gaming preinstalled). If you wanted to tinker more and take a stance against Systemd, I'd probably recommend Void.Good luck. Messing with distros is legitimately fun, and you'll invariably end up with a system that runs better than Windows trash.

@ninja8tyu the Fedora atomic distros (Kinoite, Bazzite, etc.) ship with a module called SELinux, which restricts the access of services by default--so even if there's a vuln in Systemd or some other service, it's confined to a narrow set of permitted actions. These distros also have an immutable root that keeps core system files read-only by default, so the base can't be persistently altered by an attacker.You can definitely security harden something like Void to a greater degree, but it'll take way more effort. I wouldn't sweat the Systemd thing too much though: you're less exposed to common malware on almost any Linux distro than on Windows (also pretty much everything everyone else is recommending in this thread has Systemd too, including Ubuntu, Mint, Cachyos, etc.).

Alright, i am currently trying to fix a really old dell laptop from all the way when i was in elementary school to try and fix up my actual main computerI am thinking mint if it's easy, bazzite/popOS if i'm lazyBut i technically have a second computer which, if it does get fixed, and i can get it to the internet, i can practice installing linux on there as a test runIt's taking its sweet-ass time though.
