@coolboymew @Cocoa they do have a niche use that is great though for retrocomputing.original macintosh have a 50-pin SCSI port on the back. it's their only user-accessible expansion port. There's a SCSI external ZIP drive. You can boot your Mac off it and instead of an 800kb slow as balls boot disk you can have a relatively very fast 100 or 250 megabyte boot disk. sure it might fail but you can get a big stack of them, and they're more reliable than the floppy at this point.

@coolboymew @Cocoa btw here's my own rebuilt DOS machine. except this wasn't a "retro" build, I did a bunch of work to source all new parts. The motherboard was a modern Pentium 4 industrial board that still had ISA slots. The sound card is an Orpheus 2. The VGA is a Chinese "ATI Rage XL" recreation that was built as a replacement part for a computerized truck trailer system lol.

@coolboymew @Cocoa Zoomers have cleared out the retro games from the video, music, and game exchange store I visit. Used to be you could walk in there, trade in a handful of weird old stuff, and walk out with a different set of weird old stuff. Now it's a ghost town. All they have stocked is 2010s onwards DVDs, and BluRays. Talking with one of the clerks and the owner is really struggling because the constant exchanges were what kept the bills paid for the last 30 years, and now they are stuck with a bunch of stock that won't sell and no one will sell stuff that people want. It used to be a kind of enclosed ecosystem where you would get 75% of the sale price on trade in, and that 25% markup for resale was what paid the bills. They aren't even getting recent games which they could hold onto and resell in the future, because people just buy digital nowadays.

I have seen so many little Jimmys over the last few years ask about and discuss what it was like to visit rental stores, and how whistful they were for missing out on that.The major issue I see is that we live in a low trust society, and there is a high chance that people would just rent, never return, and resell online.

The prices became so inflated recently even for completely generic hardware in the recent years that it's not worth it. If you wanna play with old OSes, use 86Box for everything up to the Win9X era, and a normal VM from that point onward. In the case of 86Box, it's almost 100% as with the hardware in your hands, except it's not.

Gundam Wing, etc interspersed with commercials and bumpers to recreate the vibe. Going to design and 3d print a little Pi media player that looks like a CRT. Plan is I am going to put it on my work bench so I can listen and watch while I work and pretend it is still 1999 and everything is going to be okay.

I just want cool nice shows, on a nice enough schedule that I don't control, that updates and change once in a while. This pretty much doesn't exist outside of TV that's dying, or Pluto-like stuff that just doesn't have the content per channelsToonami Aftermath was more or less what I was searching for (Ironically, I don't care about the Toonami stuff), but it's abandoned and there's no effort to add shows and mix up schedules after a year or so or something, so it's kinda lame in the end. Also the obsession with "blocks" kinda made it so that the mid-day sucks ass, where I'd be as willing as possible to watch it, because it had to be autistically "authentic", so once you've seen all of a bunch of shows, there was really nothing else to look forward to

That meant no new seasons in years, no schedule change so the show just outside of your hours would never become accessible, etc. Like, I would have liked to see Pokemon while working in the morning, but it was airing at 7 when I was sleeping, and 4 when I just got out of work, hurr. Except on Monday because of the retarded Sunday movie thing (because of course it had to. Like the channel!!!) because it shifted the schedule upAnd that's just one example

@Paultron the last time I built a period correct XP rig it worked great for about a year and then started having multiple failures at oncewhen I built the new one (haswell-based btw) I decided to forego the floppy drive because I only ever used it for my keyboard (which now has a gotek installed)
