@parker they ... they literally are. *house* cats are not the only felines, but big, medium, and small cats are the only animals that compose felidae. hyenas and civets and such are outside of felidae. they're in feliformia but only those inside felidae are felines. they're feliforms.

@parker sorry. i'm bad at ... those. ~30 million years ago the first animal that could be defined as the starting point of cats emerged, Proailurus. It was an ambush predator that roamed the humid temperate forests that covered most of the earth at the time. They were mobile predators in trees and on the ground, their composition comparable to a civet the size of a maine coon.~20 million years ago the proailurus split into several distinct species, the Namafelis, Katifelis, and Diamantofelis, thriving in the southern woodlands of Africa. there was a cat in europe... started with a ste.. it adopted a smaller morphology but it eventually evolved into Pseudoaelurus anyway so it doesn't matter, it then crossed the Bering Strait into NA, ~19MYA17MYA Pseudoaelurus finally became distinct enough to be defined as Hyperailurictis, a cougar-like cat, becoming the first cat native the NA, size-adjacent to modern leopards. They tackled early deer and camelids, and as prey got bigger in the colder climate, the cats adapted into the first sabre-toothed cat, Miomachairodus Pseudoailuroides.(Quick aside. Before true cats adopted this tech, the Nimrarids, cat-adjacent carnivores had it, and long before (like, 260mya) gorgonopsias, a permian synapsid, had their own sabre-tooth system. regardless, sabre-tooths of any origination are soft tissue specialists, not bone crushers. Sabre-teeth cannot handle perpendicular pressure and they would commonly chip, split, break off.. if prey moved or if they tried to bite though hard objects, this also explains why later sabre tooth cats adopted large arms to better control squirming prey before delivering deadly blows into their necks.)Paramachairodus emerged around the same time (17MYA) and they were larger and more specialized with fragile thumb sized canines.~12MYA sabre cats separately evolved in Africa and Eurasia, slightly bigger than modern lions. They has serrated steak knife-like teeth. ~11MYA a distinctive split emerged, where, in forested areas there were Dirk-tooths (stabbing specialists, for lurking and ambush focused hunting) and elsewhere there were Scimitar-tooths (slashing specialists, for high speed chases), Promegantereon being the primary dirk-tooth of the time. In Eurasia, cats like the Yoshi Garevskii of Greece and Adelphailurus Kansensis kept the scimitar teeth, meaning they stayed generalized.~8MYA Panthera split off from a group related to the main "true cats" that never adopted sabre-tooth tech around the same time "small cats" re-emerged in the fossil record.~6MYA the small cat branch split into three groups, the Jaguarundi, Pumas, and Cheetahs. Acinonyx Aicha marking the first Cheetah, eventually becoming the great cheetah, then adopting smaller frames and such with Acinonyx Pleistocaenicus and Acinonyx intermedius. Modern Cheetahs emerging ~2MYA, and the north american cheetah wasn't even a cheetah, it was a split from cougars adopting the same tech. Pumas stayed stocky with an inability to roar or purr (technically), and the Jaguarundi stayed small and long.Later sabre-tooths including Meganthereon, Homotherium, and Smilodon mark the transition from hind-leg powered pouncers to front-leg powered tacklers.
