i feel very cringe sharing an article i read but this really rreally felt like the perfect encapsulation of my feelings on drag and the “queer community”https://open.substack.com/pub/bundleofstyx/p/queer-culture-has-a-womanface-problem?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

@haematophage not gonna lie I think that despite there being very strong and convincing speech in this article it has some glaring issues. I understand the gut reaction described in the first paragraph, I'm a trans woman who has gone to drag shows and felt similar. But there is more than that to this, and especially then it came more from jealousy and my own struggles with presentation than anything. Drag exists because the early queer community, especially gay men, experienced constant attachment to femininity by the greater public, and often internally as well. Nobody is actively mocking women, instead putting on a display of this strange cultural position that they were forced into. Their masculinity is refused and they are seen by the greater public as more women than men. This is an expression of the feelings that come with that, as well as their own interactions with gender (which for queens especially are often complex). The comparison to a minstrel show is obviously flawed because queer folks aren't a powerful class, instead they're a group of people expressing gender through an outlet that feels safe. Drag is self expression rather than parody is what I've found through knowing queens. Not to mention, every point in this article sounds like a terf talking point without the context. This is just silly, and the queer community shouldn't hold back folks getting strange with gender

@haematophage though I do think the thing about the community being hostile towards the very understandable discomfort some early trans folk get from drag is a good point, and there should be more discussion about how *any* form of this (femboys, crossdressers, etc.) can be incredibly upsetting to transfolk (and in many cases, guilty of the thing the articles are placing on queens). There are things to inspect here but "drag bad" isn't really a helpful takeaway.

@haematophage @holymoly @freakshow she's a grifter who, among other things, scammed people out of a bunch of money under a phony premise that feds were coming after her, admitted after getting caught to having had chatgpt write for her, and "wrote" a really tasteless and ableist screed about "dumping your puppygirl". I think her credibility is well and fully cooked, another Brianna Wu in waiting

@haematophage @holymoly @freakshow I'm just generally not really interested in reading something from someone I know to be a bad actor, and which I have reason to suspect of being robopoop. There are surely better critiques of drag out there from better and more credible theorists. Admittedly my stance on drag and even femboys is pretty soft, the latter probably making me an outlier among xenosisters; I lean chill on both

@patchuun @holymoly @freakshow I read the article and there weren’t really any AI smells. And I’m not saying it’s never justified or that you have to read anything ultimately, but rejecting a critique because you don’t like the critic, especially when people who have nothing to do with the critic share it on the merits of the article alone, just seems kind of wrong

@freakshow the article explicitly acknowledges the origins of drag and that it’s significant in queer history and it has been a refuge for queer people in the past. it is less aggressive than I am in responding to that information though, since my response would be “so fucking what?”. I don’t give a shit that 50 years ago it was a safe haven for gender expression and gay people. It’s not the 70s anymore. My great uncle was legally married to his husband before I was born. I’m sure the drag shows he went to in 1972 were events in a meaningfully united queer community in a society that harshly punished all divergence from cishet norms. It’s 2026, though. Queer people still aren’t a powerful class, but cis queers certainly have a lot more power than trans people, and trans women are the least powerful trans people. Transfemininity is the ultimate demon of the current political landscape, and cis queers are more than happy to throw us under the bus to maintain the acceptance that they’ve already won. Cis gay men can kiss their husbands on daytime television. Cis gay men are conservative MPs. I don’t really know how to finish this train of thought clearly but fundamentally I guess I’m just disagreeing with the idea that drag is progressive anymore. It’s no longer people who are crushed under the heel of the same boot finding ways to express themselves. Cis queers do in fact oppress trans women, and they use drag to excuse it. Either they point to outlandish scary drag done by other cissexual queers and call it proof of our degeneracy, or they berate us for not being more like the reasonable drag queens who only offend them as part of an act. The modern situation is like if your childhood best friend and you both got bullied for being fat in elementary school, but they didn’t stop making the self deprecating and insulting fat jokes when they lost weight.

@haematophage @freakshow I don't think drag queens who dress up as demons or monsters or whatever are doing so to portray trans women as such. I think they are just having fun playing dress up. That conservatives seethe about them and associate them with us as an excuse to seethe harder changes nothing. Every drag queen could swear it off forever and conservatives would still seethe about us, they are simply ontologically butthurt by our existence.

@haematophage @patchuun the propaganda *isn't* made for them. They take our expressions and turn it into propaganda. No matter what we do as long as it is different from the cishet nuclear family it will ALWAYS feed the propaganda campaign. The real solution isn't "being a good trans", it's working to spread information to counter propaganda and interacting with those in your community.

@freakshow @patchuun do you know what counters the propaganda really well? do you know what makes people open their minds? seeing proof that trans people are just like them. i don’t care if it’s not fucking woke! put pretty trans women on normal TV shows! do a modern family type show with hunter schafer! all of my conservative relatives gender me correctly and have for years because most transphobia is nominal and countered by actually knowing a trans person that doesn’t behave like the caricatures presented by fearmongerers. all this bullshit about “being a good trans doesn’t change their mind” is the exact opposite of my lived experience

@patchuun @freakshow do you think gradual change doesn’t exist? do you think they legalised gay sex at the same time they legalised gay marriage? why are trans politics the only area where people pretend that every social change has been enacted immediately wholesale? There were a hundred years between the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Act. There were 40 years between the criminalisation of the slave trade in Ontario and the end of slavery outright across the British Empire. There were 30 between the decriminalisation of gay sex in Canada and the legalisation of gay marriage in Ontario. Why the fuck do we think that we get to choose public opinion?
