       I prefer my recipe videos shot on a shitty phone camera with the action barely in frame because the cook is trying to film and cook at the same time and it's not going wellto me that says "this person knows what they're talking about" way more than an overproduced youtuber video with a clickbait title/thumbnail and slick editing

       production value isn't inherently bad to be clear, some channels like Chinese Cooking Demystified have a good vibe and high production valueit's just, if you're editing and "advertising" your video like I'm a toddler who wants to stare at jingling keys, I'm actually going to stop paying attention. substance over style yknow. give me someone who knows what they're talking about but can barely put a sentence together than someone whose entire channel is the knowledge equivalent of a potemkin village

       J Kenji Lopez-Alt also has pretty decent production value but he isn't wasting your time on nonsense, he's just like "hey I'm a professional chef, here's some food I'm making today and I'm gonna walk you through why I'm making the decisions I'm making." intensely valuable

       @stellarskylark honestly, I feel this also applies to educational videos. The best channels I've found are the ones that are barely one step above a person doing a PowerPoint presentation. Basically, if you need video editing functionality that a free video editor cannot provide, you're doing too much.

       @stellarskylark I lost a lot of faith in Veritasium when they made a video many years ago going all in on self-driving car propaganda. And this was, I believe, before they got bought out. I still appreciate the channel and even now they put out some interesting videos, but yeah.
