       I just realized:The only reason to have datacenters in orbit is to prevent an angry mob from destroying them.Ofc AI is only useful at replacing employees if you can use it in the place where you need the employees. But SpaceX also has Starlink, so it can deliver AI at any place in the world, in a way that is not vulnerable to angry people cutting fiber cables...

       @wolf480pl the official reasoning is to have constant solar power (i.e. riding the dawn-dusk solar synchronous orbit), so specifically nobody could be cutting power cables.however, aside from all the other reasons the entire idea is ridiculous this also means that latency would vary wildly over the day

       @sqrt2 also, cooling in space is a nightmareMy point is, putting datacenter in orbit is so difficult that the only reason why someone would do it that I can think of is that they think datacenters on the ground are too vulnerable.

And if they do, I hope the government prevents them from treating them that way.The best way this can go IMO is a UBI, or at least a conditional basic income for people who have lost their jobs due to automation.@r4f4l

       @light @r4f4l Rulers only care about people insofar as they're needed to produce GDP.If you can produce everything without people, then people are no longer key supporters, and you can get rid of them.If you still need people for manual labor, but not for intellectual work, then people become fungible and you can be harsher on them (see feudalism) because hungry, overworked people can still do manual labor.
