It's very sad to see #rsync getting polluted with LLM slop now.Even more sad, given who is doing it.People are talking angrily about "the maintainer" and suggesting "this guy" [should have his commit bit revoked] etc. apparently not realising that "this guy" is Tridge, both the original author of rsync and creator of samba. His PhD thesis "Efficient Sorting & Synchronization Algorithms" describes the original rsync algorithm. Still worth a read, even now.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Tridgell

@dentangle it's always bizarre when people who are so fierce smart fall down into the LLM holei keep thinking, but shouldn't they know better?and then I remember how fierce smart the people are who succumb to conspiracy theories.

@meena Indeed. It was a shock.Few people have done so much to fight for Open Source as Tridge has.Samba was a key part of the whole anti-trust suit in the EU against Microsoft, and Tridge was at the front of that.Git exists because Tridge wanted an alternative to the proprietary BitKeeper for the Linux kernel. It's as though Elrond said, "Hey, that's a shiny ring you have there! Do you mind if I try it on?"😢

@dentangle @meena You guys need to wake up. Yes, you have to control it, but this new technology is a huge empowerment.

@nabnux I agree it was not a good entry with "wake up". But i'm surprised that people see these great engineers using it and still think that they have caught a virus that made them dumb.@dentangle @meena
