       This is @samueloph being asked to revert to the pre-vibe rsync in Debiam. @ariadne plans to switch to openrsync in Alpine.Important decisions to be made here.It‘s about trust, not technology. rsync has earned trust over the years.        @ariadne @icing @samueloph I'm pointing out that appealing to the rsync maintainer in Debian may not go as one expects.The review part was to say at least tridge isn't a zombie as some have said (though not here).

       @icing @ariadne although the recent regression contained AI-generated commits, the root issue is that rsync needs funding and contributors, the first serious regressions started on the CVE fixes of January 2025 (before AI was involved) and it was clear at the time that the project was in serious need of contributors/funding. I've started packaging gokr-rsync  for Debian but ended up without enough time to complete it. Reverting rsync to pre-AI commits will not solve the issue unfortunately.

       @bsdphkThanks for the insights.As @samueloph pointed out, the problems existed before LLMs entered the scene and your description confirms that.Until the FOSS funding problem gets solved (haha!), maybe openrsync is better for distributions.For someone who has invented the whole thing, this must suck though.@ariadne

       @icing @bsdphk @samueloph it is complicated, because openrsync does not support the latest rsync protocol, i think it is at version 29.  so it is not fully feature compatible.but at the same time, rsync has had a lot of regressions over the past few releases...i really don't know the answer.  hence why i look at openrsync.
