I was more or less prepared for BitWarden enshittification, but that affects me less, because I'm self-hosting VaultWarden, so I have a little leeway.What I was not prepared for is 3/4 of Zulip's board joining Anthropic.As a direct consequence, the onlyjunk.fans Zulip will be gone when I'm back from RustWeek. I can't deal with it1 right now, but it's gonna be the first thing when I'm back home.Figure out an alternative. ↩︎

I'm back from RustWeek, but didn't have the spoons to deal with OJF's Zulip yet. Still trying to figure out what to replace it with.I liked Zulip's threads. Whatever I switch to, will need that.That pretty much leaves forums & mailing lists, and... I'm not sure I want to run a forum. But mailing lists have a spam problem, unless I moderate. Which I might do, because I don't expect the traffic to be high in the first place.Oooor... it could be The Fediverse! A custom little frontend, a bit like https://second-hand.onlyjunk.fans/, which fetches the timeline of a hashtag from my server, and organizes it into threads. Copy any link to your fedi client of choice, reply, boom, your message is there.

I think I'm liking this last one, using a hashtag on fedi. Everyone can then use whatever client they want, I can make it look like a forum-like thing when viewed on the web. Visibility can be respected, we can tag other people, and anyone can participate.And the only software I need to run is a tiny little frontend, half of which I already built for second-hand.

For those who do, I can set up a tiny bot that anyonymously posts to the hashtag. For those who don't... well, email is still there, or they can sign up for any of the many fedi servers.It's not much different than signing up to Zulip, or to a forum, or whatever.

I could run a lemmy instance or something similar. But from where I'm sitting, interacting with a lemmy instance from a Mastodon or GtS account is... not really working too well.If I'm going to build this thing on ActivityPub, I want it to work with whatever mastodon/gts/etc client people use. There are plenty of those.

Hrm. Do I make it follow a hashtag, or do I pick the timeline of a dedicated account?If it follows a hashtag, then any toot with that hashtag that my server sees will appear. The downside is that my server has to see the toot, which means I likely need to follow the person, or they need to tag an account on my server in, or it needs to get boosted into my timeline.That's not a very good user experience, imo.So mentioning a dedicated account will likely do a better job.

I see two ways to implement this group thingy. But before I get there, a note: I'm aware of Guppe. It uses a tech stack nothing else on my infra uses (nodejs & mongodb), and its repo is archived. I've looked at a couple of other group-emulating things, and none really fit what I had in mind.

One way to implement it is a custom ActivityPub server that speaks S2S AP, and has a limited Mastodon-compatible API. It accepts follows, retoots mentions, etc.This gives me the most power, but also requires implementing moderation, and a whole lot of APIs.

The other option is to have a dedicated account on this GtS instance of mine, and a separate tool that looks at incoming mentions and retoots them.The advantage of this is that most of the work here is done by GtS, including moderation.The downside is that I need to be able to monitor incoming mentions, keep track of what I've seen, handle restarts, etc.

In both cases, I can provide a custom web view. I might be able to implement a "log in with Mastodon OAuth" (mastodon-compatible, I'll be testing with GtS & Masto, everything else is best effort), which would allow anyone to log in to the custom web ui, and post new topics, reply, etc.

Good plan, but also bad plan, because wtf is an MVP in this case.MVP is a thing that periodically polls the home timeline, and periodically retoots anything it has not retooted yet.At first, I won't even store the last toot ID seen, I'll just poll the timeline, iterate through the results, and retoot anything needing a retoot.Then, I'll store the last toot ID seen, and iterate through the timeline since that id.Then I'll mke it use a websocket instead of polling.
