Open question for the devout Christians of fedi: do you think believing in the old testament is required for belief in the new testament?I don't usually like to talk about religion online and I'm sure this will turn into a hellthread against my wishes but I'll just shift through the bad to focus on the helpful messages but for context; i am EXTREMELY wishy washy on the old testament. I think there's a lot of good things in it, i really like pslams, i really like the book of job, but I've always had problems with the concept of original sin and the idea that man is outside of nature and not simply within and apart of it (the latter of which being my personal view, which probably comes off as pagan). That being said, i have absolutely nothing against Christ, i just think it appears as if belief in the divinity of Christ as well as his overall doctrine requires belief also in the old testament, which i know the latter is something not every Christian is 100% united on. Any info or takes on the subject will be appreciated.

At the very least, you must accept that man, in Adam, chose to rebel against sin and dies for it, the reason Jesus Christ had to come and die for us. This is not primarily taught in the New Testament and the apostles' references to it require the Old Testament's primacy on the doctrine to source their own teaching on the subject. In fact, much of what Christ and the apostles say is taken from the Old Testament itself, especially when you see the clause, "It is written," followed by a citation. Whenever you see Jesus talk about "the Scriptures", He is talking first and foremost about the Old Testament as the New Testament would not fully come about until John's Revelation in the late first century."For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." When Paul wrote this to the Romans, much of the New Testament did not exist. The previous verse cites Psalm 69 to show that brothers must bear each other's weaknesses to bear each other up.Then we have the oft-cited 2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God[b] may be complete, equipped for every good work." While most of Paul's letters and some of the gospels were circulating when Paul wrote his final epistle, the second letter to Timothy, the Old Testament was still the main and only Scriptures that all believers at the time had access to. This fact emphasizes the need to read the Old Testament to be complete in all righteousness God expects on this Earth.Finally Christ warned that Old Testament is forever valid and one must listen to its voice, even when only evil men share it."Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:17-20)"Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 'The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.'" (Matthew 23:1-3)Notice that Christ says, "Law and the Prophets," which is a term for the whole OT. "Moses Seat" refers to the Pentateuch. tl;dr You should accept the Old Testament because Christ and the Apostles themselves unitedly affirmed the full and eternal validity and supreme authority of the Old Testament. You cannot separate Christ and the Apostles from the Old Testament.

@WhiteJihadJaws It should also be noted that, despite each major branch accusing the other two of failing to properly observe the Old Testament, they all agree, at least superficially, that the OT is eternally valid and authoritative for their churches. There is your unity on the matter.This does not take into consideration the so-called "liberal" groups in each camp, who all ought to be considered Hell-bound heretics by everyone anyways, who see the OT as nothing more than interesting literature made by mere human hands.

@WhiteJihadJaws As for this">the idea that man is outside of nature and not simply within and apart of it I don't know who is telling you that we teach this, but he is completely wrong. God put man *into* the Garden, the representation of perfect nature, to manage and tend toward nature (Gen. 2:15) and be apart of nature. The Lord demands that we care for animals:"Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast..." (Pro 12:10)"Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds..." (Pro 27:23)And Nature's fate is inextricably connected to man's fate. Creation will be resurrected from corruption and death and glorified when mankind rises from the dead and the sons of God among the pot of humanity are revealed. See Isaiah 65 and Romans 8.Notice also that four of the five passages I mention or cite are from the OT.

The Old Testament is as much Scripture as the New. Jesus puts His stamp of approval on the whole of Scripture. To believe that Jesus is God and to trust in Him for your salvation is to believe the teachings of Scripture.

The word of God is the word of God m8. That being said, Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy, you don't need an understanding of the old testament to be saved. As for your doubts, someone like @SuperLutheran and @Myles would be a better people to ask.
