       I used to be a Pixelfed user but left once I realized development was essentially stalled and the ActivityPub implementation was critically broken. With the developer concentrating on Loops, a TikTok clone which is filled with reposted TikTok brain rot, I discovered https://subversive.pics.I use Ocular by @rostiger and now have my own static image gallery at https://img.ominous.net/. There’s a growing community of users in the Ocular webring and participants in Subversive.pics.

       Ocular handles everything, RSS feed support, highly customizable and of course the users of these static image galleries are not following any trends. There’s no likes to worry about, no follower counts and of course no algo.At the end of the day, it’s a low-volume feed of interesting, cool people expressing themselves without worrying about what others think.It’s way more interesting than anything I ever saw on Instagram.

       I appreciate what Pixelfed is, but as far as I can tell, the developer behind this project is extremely toxic and has some unresolved issues. I’ve seen more than a few community complaints related to the project that have turned me off from using it.It does, however, provide a nice off-ramp for Instagram users to enter the Fediverse, and there’s no denying that provides a lot of value.I have come to enjoy the simplicity of what a static image gallery provides.
