Fuck systemd. Seriously. FUCK THAT SHIT. I am so goddamn tired of it getting its nasty, poorly-coded, bug-ridden fingers into EVERYTHING like some kind of goddamn Microsoft library would.I can't use the shutdown command anymore, because systemd says "but you have a terminal open! In your own UID! that you're issuing the shutdown command from!" and prevents it from happening.So I have to instead systemctl reboot -f. And the -f is REQUIRED because see above, re my own TTY.IT GETS WORSE.

I needed to reboot a client server, which normally I would do with at 1800 shutdown -r now. But I can't do that anymore, and I can never remember the arguments for systemctl, so I look them up.OH HEY, how convenient, there's a "when" option. No need to faff about with at anymore! Just do --when=+220min, as documented at https://linuxcommandlibrary.com/man/systemctl-reboot !

@shom either that, or the --when argument just doesn't fucking work.Either is a pretty damn unforgivable issue. If there's anything wrong with a --when argument WHEN SUCH AN ARGUMENT IS PRESENT the tool should complain and exit, NOT just blithely reboot the system immediately!

@jimsalter @shom interesting. Sounds like yet another ubuntu-ism? None of my fedora or rocky boxes behaves like that. I'd be fairly upset too if I couldn't just issue a straight reboot or shutdown when sshed into somewhere.

@fedops @jimsalter @shom I hate to say it but I think @fedops is right.I just tested this on CachyOS (An Arch derivative I <3 for desktop use. It magicks away the hellscape that is Nvidia drivers on Linux, but you do have to get used to paying the Arch tax The community is amazing so for me it's a wash, but YMMV)systemctl halt / poweroff --when=+1m does exactly what you'd expect.I wonder if this is another upshot of them porting many of the userland tools to Rust?

@feoh @fedops @shom which means a lot of my frustration is really with Canonical for clearly not testing their bullshit. And I mean... that's also been a *very* common theme for me in recent years. The old grey mare is *not* what she used to be. I "enjoy" snaps about as much as I enjoy systemd, and for essentially the same damn reasons.

@fedops @jimsalter @shom I agree completely. When you choose to make a change, the responsibility for that change sits squarely on your shoulders. If you break long established contracts, that’s on you. I think some of the frustration is coming from the fact that canonical would seem to have made it clear from their decisions that they’re not overly concerned about this and I’m more than willing to break a few eggs to make a better omelette.The problem is that some people are getting awfully sick of finding large quantities of eggshell in their omelette.
