       @cwebber I have a permanently burned-in memory of the smart watches the kids get in Spy Kids 2, with their holographic displays and inelegant bulk. Also famously had the ability to do "anything you could ever want...except tell time" because they packed it so full of features there was no room left for the clock. It's something I'd like to at least partially replicate with modern wearables someday.

       the computer in my apartment, rivaled only by the computer in my basement!the 15khz sound of the monochrome monitor horizontal scan circuit, the high-persistence phosphor fading in and out with every screenfull of text displayed as my field-of-view is crowded with a bunch of monochrome terminals... the coffee table, the kitchen counter... lest i forget all of the coax cables running across the floor adjoining them to their controller!the white noise is broken by the sound of a pin-feed printer, older than my dad and half my body weight, sucking in more and more greenbar paper from the box underneath the kitchen counter as the next print job flickers in; the printed paper haphazardly shoots out of the top (and, naturally, onto the freshly-mopped floor) as the red LEDs flicker with the current draw of the motors.i round the corner and see a mainframe, the hot air shooting out of its front as the CPU is pegged at 100% doing anything and everything from handling posts on the fediverse to running simulations of deforming fiberglass PCB substrates!a whole manner of fiber cables and thick parallel channel cables snake out of the back, pushed up against a bookcase as they fit their way to disk arrays, terminal controllers, network processors, and tape drives; a bundle of black power cables does the same thing but with a much simpler disciplinethe data transfer LED on the terminal controller randomly flickers, with its status display radiating brightly through the darkness with a red "3174" written out on its 7-segment display; the cheapo DC fans rattle away to keep it overkill-cooled from all manner of thermal threatsthe network processor cranks away, barely able to sustain the influx of fediverse traffic on the modern web; it tries valiantly but ultimately gets overwhelmed... never crashing, though, only running slow!eventually, the autoloading cartridge tape drive sucks a cartridge into the drive assembly, and the white noise is once again brokenthe pale purple light of my apartment is switched to a golden-orange as the sun sets, the light shining through the windows and complimenting the synthetic light beautifully as the stove strikes up... gotta eat somehow!

       @cwebber I don't know that I can pick just one, but . . .WordPerfect 3.2 with the little plastic multicolor guide that slotted over the left-side function keypad.X11 with Motif widgets running on a GIGANTIC 19 inch Sun workstation monitorThe amber monochrome screens on an old VT420 terminal.My old giant trackball from like 2004 that was about the size of a pool cue and a really comfortable hand rest.The white 11 inch MacBook from like 2003.The 2013 series of MacBook Pros. Flawless.The golden age of Lenovo ThinkPads, including the little X1s that were such great little low power workhorses.Flip phones. Seriously. My old ultraruggedized Casio flip was such a great device.LaTeX's default typesetting output. I love that I can get it with Markdown and pandoc now.ANSI animations and Operation Overkill II on BBS doors over a 2400 baud modem.EDIT: OH. And workstations from like 1996-2004 that were super well designed for field service. Easy to open and service. LOVE.

       @cwebber I feel like industrial/rugged is what I love the most hardware wise.So Ghost in the Shell speaks to me, same for IBM-era Thinkpads.And GUI-wise, I'd say the stuff you'd find on a modern Unix workstation in 95 ~ 2008.
