       The surveillance state wants to extract value, but there's almost no value left to extract. People don't have any more money to spend. There's no "there" there. And I assure you, when people start having to choose between "work 60 hours a week and still have no money" and "not work at all and still have no money", they will not choose to starve and work.

       Economic crashes happen for a multitude of reasons. One of these reasons, and the relevant one here, is that Capitalism forgets that the masses are not an infinite supply of money to be taken from. They're real people with hard choices to make, and families to feed, and very little left to have taken.

       What's going to happen is that investors will eventually realize there's no final state where they see a profit, and pull out -- the contracts will get cancelled, the hardware sold off at fire sale prices to recoup something, and the people involved will be pariahs.

       Forget you and me, the thing these AI CEOs are asking of the Capitalist Class, the investors, is to blindly spend a literal mountain of treasure on a boondoggle that will never, ever see a return on investment. There will be no superintelligence, no AGI breakthrough, none of those things can or will happen at this level of tech.
