@cassidyclown byeah. over here we pay a high amount of taxes (in comparison to neighboring countries) and the roads are all fucked anyway, probably 10% of tax money is put on em, so I can say that instead of subsidizing a generation that had all handed to em, i also subsidize the corrupt generation of today! yipee!

@cassidyclown also i remember congressmen arguing that they need 10 grand (in USD HERE. PERU. HERE) of monthly salary to "work properly". Mind you they barely do shit and many don't even go to congress to work, not even attending the virtual meetings.

@cassidyclown oh i say it anyway since i'm on a 3rd world shithole. My country's congress should outright be cleansed. The country would probably keep going business as usual because that's how it's been historically, people keep on working (informally mostly, because what UPSIDES exist to going formal?). We would've had a failure like Venezuela if it wasnt because the Central Bank is independent and managed by people that are actually competent. I don't wanna go "muh left" or "muh right", but the leftist parties on here want to rewrite the constitution and even though they say "oh no we are not gonna touch the Central Bank or Julio Velarde" it doesn't really seem like they'll keep that promise and that's when the dam breaks and welp, pain peko.

@sam I'd pretend to be mystified but I know it goes to bullshit like the royal commission into antisemitism, other studies on random bullshit no one cares about, payrolls of many generally incompetent government staff (note: this is not an argument for contractors, just for better standards - it's borderline impossible to be fired from some government jobs here, people just get moved around) and lining whoever's pockets. Accidentally went mask-off about this when driving my sister somewhere and she said "erm ackshually taxes are good because what about the disabled" like fucking hell the disabled would be living like kings right now if this was managed properly.

@sam actually a note on government work - in aus boomer public servants get paid their salary into retirement "defined benefits scheme"/ the golden handcuffs. They took this away in the early 2000s. Which means if you're a gen z public servant you get to pay for your boomer boss's salary after he retires while you don't get jack shit except raped for eternity.

@azure @cassidyclown Superannuation seems to get rid of the positives that a normal pension would have while also adding on the negatives the American system has where it's basically entirely on the employee and usually gets invested in the market which doesn't always go up

@sam @azure the worst part is that you can't opt out - you pick a fund and hope for the best. You can have a "self-managed" superfund but from what I've heard (albeit not very much and I should probably become better educated about it) it's a massive pain to jump through the hoops and maintain.

@azure @cassidyclown does Australia actually export the same amount of oil and (what I assume to be LNG) gas as the UAE? The UAE exports like 20x as much oil while Australia exports like 20x as much LNG but I don't know how the scale and money is different between LNG and oil, I assume oil is way more lucrative

@sam @azure we're the third largest lng exporter in the world - nowhere near as much oil. But our biggest export is iron ore. Big Mining pretty much got a standing prime minister fired for trying to tax them. It's known political suicide to try interfering in any meaningful way with the interests of BigMining. They are particularly an all-consuming vortex of influence in western australia. BigMining owns everyone. Australia manufactures nothing - we just send raw resources to china and american companies get the profits.
