       @kaia @Violet serious answer, people who were born deaf can't necessarily read English because they don't speak English in the first place. imagine trying to learn a language whose writing system is based on a phonetic alphabet, entirely in textual form, when you have no frame of reference for what any of the phonemes are. BSL doesn't even have the same grammatical structure as English. writing systems for sign languages have been devised but none of them have become standard as far as i know.

       @aetios @Violet for many Deaf people, their first language is a sign language, and English etc. would be a second language (and one that's extremely hard to learn without being able to hear it). Additionally, Deaf people are often vastly disadvantaged in the education system, which further complicates written language comprehension.
