       Lawrence of Arabia tells the tale. With incredible skill Lawrence assembles an Arab army to cross the desert and attack a fortress whose fixed guns cannot fire to the rear. They win a glorious victory. They are in a powerful position to negotiate with the British and gain independence... then they have some other stuff to do so they get restless and wander off, losing all their hard won leverage. They remain subject to colonial powers for another few decades, and might have forever if not for decolonialist dogma infecting the European empires.
