So, the Suez Canal belongs to Egypt and they toll the traffic. The Panama Canal belongs to Panama and they toll the traffic, but the Hormuz Strait belongs to no one and no one is allowed to toll it?Iran disagrees. And the Strait is still closed unless Iran collects a toll and issues a permit. Trump isn't going to change that.

canals have maintenance costs affiliated with them since they require lockwork and constant dredging. a more apt comparison to hormuz would be the danish belts, which as you'll recall had quite a political fight over them that nearly bled over into war to establish international norms of freedom of navigation under the brits (and to their advantage)

The Suez Canal Authority is not a "hedge fund" and the money goes to the government of Egypt and the canal is recognized as "property of Egypt."The Panama Canal Authority is part of the Panamanian government. The tolls are collected for the government of Panama, and the Government of Panama controls the canal.I'm not sure where you got your info.
