       age range enforcement is kind of a weird modern construct and im not sure whos pushing itnot like adulthood but the push for schools to force age band sociaizing and the pushes for not dating across the "waves"its not a natural thing

       @manfromhuh somewhere they invented the concept children needed to "be with their age group" and the schools basically arrest people to stay in these age group silos. the whole cohort ages up, but they spend a nontrivial amount of their life in an adversarial prison where "same age = peers" and "older = authoritarian antagonists"they claim its because of cohesion or whatever, but the evidence doesn't really support it. people being the same age group in the same community tends to just mean they have default rapport and people are more trusting of people with rapport. so even if the teacher is old, being communicable and relatable actually does the same thing.so all its really doing is just arresting people who should be in different tracks for each skill (like the old one room schoolhouse) to keep them in their "wave" of students, when that may in fact be deeply and actively harmful. its just an accounting trick to make scheduling replacement workers easier (which is what they wanted, in the "we just need factory workers" letters) but you may note that "boomers" and "gen x" and the general isolation of society to its approved shift type is not something that is actually in literature before rockefeller fucked up the USA.

       @icedquinn Ah. It's been noted, and my personal experience, that homeschooled kids tend to be better socialized and much better at socializing with people outside of their age bracket. The theory tends to be that because most homeschools work more like the one room school, they just aren't as siloed and don't see talking to people that aren't the same age as weird.On a personal level it has always seemed odd to me that a school system that is ostensibly preparing you for the workplace would emphasize that stratification so much. At no other point in your life will you only be interacting with people who are within a year of your age.

       @manfromhuh it may have been trying to condition people to associate age with authority, or just to make the graduation cycles regular and accountable.the scientific managers tend to trend towards crushing the human to fit the models.

       @manfromhuh people aren't supposed to draw out the game is to railroad you in to taking on 200k$ in debts that you spend the rest of your live not being intended to pay off but otherwise being too afraid to collective action your boss and conclude that actually the helium gas is preferable to paying 300 variations of rent and still only having a 20% shot at a girlfriend while being afraid of homelessness at all times and go "actually, you know what, bill ackerman can just go do his own chores."
