@Erpel@hai.z0ne.social from my own experience using it, id say its pretty solidthey charge for cloud sync, but theres also a plugin that lets you self-host and thats been working fine for me (theres occasional conflict resolution issues but that's to be expected)admittedly the main thing i use it for is occasional note taking and making todo lists for myself, but stilli cant comment on the ownership but a quick search doesnt show them doing anything stupid

@frawst@fedi.fraw.st I basically want to write a longer text with git syncing. Apparently that doesn't cost anything. Only their own cloud asks for money as far as I understand the pricing

@Erpel@hai.z0ne.social yeah, the git syncing is done via a community plugin (i dont use it, i use one called self-hosted livesync which uses a db instead, but still), and thats all free

@Erpel It's very good, but it is not open source. That's a rather big downside for me, but in terms of features and stability i heard nothing but good things.@somecat Has experience with it.

Markdown native2. simple spellcheking with the possibilities to add own words (for names and shit)3. possibility to automate a git sync in the backgroundObsidian ticks all of it (with a plugin for git ofc), so maybe there is something else out there that works as well

@Erpel@hai.z0ne.social I love it. I only wish it were open source. I use it a lot with my partner (for recipes, shopping lists, etc.). The only issue is that the mobile apps do not work well with Nextcloud, and the company really tries to push its paid cloud service on users.I am still trying out Logseq as open-source alternative.

@catraxx @somecat @Erpel When I use the scroll wheel, there's a very noticeable delay before the editor actually starts scrolling. And then, it's just very slow. It's like those fancy annoying websites that insist on overriding the browser scroll behavior with their custom one.

Though, it's more DYI than something like Obsidian and probably less comfortable.There's a language server called Markdown-Oxide: oxide.md/indexIt essentially adds the linking capabilities from Obsidian to any text editor with LSP-capabilities, such as Zed, Gram, VSCode, etc. A lot of these editors also have git integration, spell checking extensions and maybe other stuff you'd find useful, so you might be able to build something that fulfills your requirements.

Something easy that will work out of the box is better for me, eypecially when I don't know if I will keep up the whole process once i finish the current project. It might be a one off thing, so all time spent must be in some proportion to how long it is actually usefull to me.Besides compsing my own setup always comes with the draw back that you have to update singel elements with the risk of breaking to the point you can't reproduce it on a new system if neede.

@Erpel@hai.z0ne.social It's extremely bad. It is fully proprietary software that spies on you and wants you to pay for "cloud" services. Definitely forget about using it unless they actually decide to release the source code at some point.I want you to know Markdown is an incredible simple format. You can edit Markdown files in almost any editor and something like Obsidian is likely not needed. Many editors such as Kate have a Markdown mode where you can see your file rendered while editing side-to-side.If you need more advanced note taking and organizational features there are also applications like QOwnNote available, which I also recommend.But if you really want to become enlightened; I recommend ditching the Markdown format all together and switching the superior Org format instead inside Emacs.

@Erpel@hai.z0ne.social People says it's good. I installed it a very long time ago and it's still sitting there unused. I don't really have a need for a markdown editor on my computer tbh. And I don't do anything that complex that requires a diagram. I normally use pen and paper if I do anyways, but that's just me being old fashioned I guess.
