       Yes, that's why the License distinction is important.  GPL and variants are trying to bring back the old days of knowing what the fuck is going on inside the thing you bought (see radio image) by doing contract-bullshittery to force the release of new code by the person or corporation modifying and using the code.MIT, with its "do whatever you want lmao" license allows corporations to grab open code and do whatever they want.
