Memorial Day weekend calls for picnics 🧺One Hundred Picnic Suggestions (1915) contains ideas both traditional and… questionable to modern tastes before you pack your picnic basket: chicken salad, roast beef sandwiches 🥪, eggs in aspic jelly 🥚, and… tongue salad 👅🥗?!Check out this public domain culinary curiosity in our collections ⤵️https://archive.org/details/onehundredpicnic00larn/page/n7/ #MemorialDay #picnic #cookbooks #vintagecookbooks

@internetarchive That's not so questionable at all. Tongues of cows where still well known as sausage in the 1970's, at least in Germany.Animal parts like this were partly specialities and partly a meal for the poor, depending on the given situation.

@internetarchive I’m trying to imagine peanut butter with olives, or with sardines! (tongue is still served in delis)

@internetarchive To be fair, it’s not titled “One Hundred GOOD Picnic Suggestions.” Cucumber is almost an afterthought in the cucumber sandwiches, mentioned just once in the last sentence. And I like how “salad” is defined as “anything mixed with mayonnaise.” I think some plaque built up on my arteries just by thumbing through this book.

@internetarchive I hope you are not disparaging the delicacy of cold tongue? My partner’s papa of ~95, loved it and was so happy to buy some to share with a strange Englishman who also loved it.My Dad always told the joke of the pompous lady being offered tongue in a restaurant…”I couldn’t possibly eat something that has been in an animals mouth! Get me some eggs!”

@internetarchive Never insult aspic nor beef tongue as "questionable" again.

@internetarchive Noted. When using the time machine, skip the picnics.
