@p Iirc the biggest opponent of quote reposts for the longest time was gargron, I bet he would love this. I don't understand why all you libs get so upset about quote retweeting... it's just a tool to share posts while optionally adding commentary to them, something which bloggers have been doing since forever. (and usenetters)One of the most valid usecases of QRT is being able to privately repost. If someone is using a locked account and only wants followers to see their posts, it makes sense they would only want their followers to see their reposts, which fedi doesn't do now.There is something nice about being able to just click the button and share a post in the same way you can share an image or an audio file, with whatever privacy settings you want.A different way to solve the quote retweet "problem" would be having front end replace a link to a post with an embedded post object, or else making the QRT button generate a screenshot that gets inserted into the post.The second option has the benefit of not losing context when a post is edited or deleted, but if we're going down that road, why stop there, we should bring back "classic Twitter retweets" (format like RT @user : "post contents") because those also actually repost a message even if the original is later edited or deleted and those retweets can be marked unlisted, followers, or direct as well.

@sampler I had typed up a response but I do not appear to have *sent* the post before the machine I was typing on lost power. C'est la guerre.The issue with quote posts is that they are a special *thing* instead of just links that are decorated by the backend and then drawn (for anyone that *wants* that) as little clickaable boxes on the frontend. The UI wouldn't have to change for any of the fluoridated clients and it would gracefully degrade and it would act less fucking retarded. You know how fedibbs does this? `,` is used to find posts by URL, you see a link to another post and you type `,` and paste the URL then you see it; bloat works the same with the search box. These are URLs and every time there is a URL, fedi motherfuckers invent a new and different way to treat that URL and they never manage to use it like a link. Why just one? Why does it need special fields? Nobody thought about it.

@sampler @p Quotes aren't inherently bad as such but the mechanism they're implemented in break discussion in a way that's understandable why people don't like it. The majority of quotes I see in the wild don't even add any additional commentary (of or of not the benign kind) but could've easily instead just been a reply and break off the thread for no reason.
