I think he's observing a class of people who treat banter as a contest instead of fun times and a way of seeding a discussion. This is the style that slowly choked imageboards, it's optimizing for being as annoying as possible instead of entertaining or thought-provoking. Like, I get that a lot of people here consider saying the n-word their hobby and they're very hostile to those who don't want to join in, and If you question the productivity of that hobby, you get the> He won't say the word! Why won't you say the word?! You must hate freedom of speech!treatment. This is something I've witnessed in action before, and people get really bent out of shape about it: We have a wordfilter over on gikopoi that changes the hard-R into "bobba" and turns you into a :poolsclosed: guy, and when it got turned on a couple of these rightwinger types got really mad about it, even though they could've just used another word or put a 1 in it or whatever. Kind of makes you question why people put so much power into words when they're just words. There's a lot more creative words for black people out there.

@sicp @Zergling_man @MK2boogaloo yeah, the whole gatekeeping thing wasn't even the point that i was trying to make. I just read hellthreads on every platform and there's so much fucking vitriol. I know its cool to think we're all badasses, but I remember when we gave of ourselves without expectation of reward, because anon always delivers. I remember when we were patient and collaborative. Maybe I'm getting old.
