       Apparently trans women are banned from women's chess competitions. I wonder whether the other chess competitions are gender-unrestricted or explicitly men-only.This matters as the difference between "trans people are forced into mixed pro chess" (bad) and "trans women are completely banned from pro chess" (even worse).Also I wonder how trans men are affected. Are they "generously" allowed to compete with the women or are they too banned entirely?

       @LunaDragofelis@void.lgbt Professional Chess is full of elitist snobs. They were crying and complaining when the newest generations were trying to bring chess closer to the regular people because it "trivializes" it according to what I heard. They also have separate tiers for men and women, which makes absolutely no fucking sense because there is no fucking way a man can have an advantage at a logic game against a woman or the other way around, there is no physical contact (hand contact maybe during blitz or bullet) and there is absolutely no reason for it. But there they are.It's because of traditions, from centuries ago. And it needs to be modernized.

       @hsza @LunaDragofelis It's about visibility. For mysterious reasons (read: rampant sexism) there are lots more (cis) men than (cis) women in chess.Women-only titles hope to give the few women that are there despite the odds more of a spotlight. Basically saying "look, we do have *some* women around here" in the hopes of attracting more.None of this justifies excluding trans women from competitions, that's still fucked up for the "usual"  reasons.

       @LunaDragofelis i don't know to what extent the whole 'biology' thing goes in the olympics and i'm not well versed on that side of things, but surely in CHESS of all things... gender should, i dunno, not fucking matter???? like what is the mindset, "you think like a man and you think like a woman" what is the process here i don't get it

       @billy @LunaDragofelis obviously testosterone based puberty gives people an unfair advantage in chess. Someone who had only ever had estrogen dominated hormones cannot even hope to win against them in chess. That's radical feminism 101.

       @ellenor2000 @LunaDragofelis afaik also the scoring system makes it difficult to qualify for the "ungendered" competition because the way to get your score high enough is to compete against others whose score is high enough, so creating a separate pool for women (plus women having been historically somewhat discouraged from chess) naturally results in elite women players having lower scores than elite men.

       @LunaDragofelis a lot of sports weren't gender restricted, its just that males are the recipients of more genetic mutation than women so the best and worst in a large enough sample will be male.womens sports are somewhat a combination of women not appearing in those samples, or in some cases because a woman did beat a man and the men got mad about it.
