I decided to look at the current state of standalone mp3 players. For some reason they're all chunkier than my first iPod and have absurd specs. Why would you ever need 3GB of RAM to play audio? 32GB is a couple FLAC albums and is pitiful for storage. All this can be yours for $300.It is nice that many of them have physical buttons and knobs, admittedly.

Serious question: Why? You can get a junker phone, strip out 99% of the stuff on it and get the same thing if you're looking for an .mp3 player that isn't your main phone.

@brimshae Someone mentioned Rockbox still existed and I was curious what platforms that OS was being developed for now. I don't listen to much music anymore, so was not planning to buy one. The more I research any sort of electronic devices the higher the probability I will buy though.A junker phone is probably going to have poor shielding and pick up random static/CPU electrical noise, so I do understand the appeal of a dedicated quality device.

@MK2boogaloo Some do not, surprisingly. And the Bluetooth is sometimes an old version with poor audio quality. Lots of variations.

@Zettour @brimshae Even worse, lagdroid only does software volume control, so the lower the volume at which you listen, the more severely it will cripple the resolution. I don't know whether those android chinkplayers even address this.

@Zettour You're not expected to use that storage for music, it's just for the android system (it's pretty bloated). You're supposed to bring your own sd cards to store your music.

@rhyse It's amazing that we still have to worry about performance with how much faster the hardware is today. I had a cheap USB form factor device 20 years ago that did well with large music collections.

@Zettour we're worried about performance because everything has to compute more shit. If it doesn't compute more shit then people won't buy the next chip.It was security a while back. Then bitcoin. Now AI. And that's why a fucking camera needs a full OS and to broadcast a hidden wifi network. Which is a real thing I sperged out about this week.

@Zettour From more affordable models with decent specs, format support and good sound quality I can recommend Hiby R1, Fiio Snowsky Echo Mini and Fiio Snowsky Disc. Still ~€100, but it's bearable, and for sure have better sound quality than those €15 MP3 players I had back in ground school. Fiio's players can double as DAC/AMP for PC, so it's pretty good value-wise considering how much these cost. I use RPi as work PC and Echo Mini as external sound card, while I'm not on the go. Don't go for those "designer" MP3 players though, they are essentially smartphones stripped off GSM and just as gay. They have pretty nice outside design, that I will admit.

@rhyse @Zettour In case of music players, it's very niche market right now, as smartphones can play music just fine, so it's inevitably catering to "audiophile" audience - and that's where the problems begin. They are basically a bunch of spergs that spin conspiracy theories about how exotic states of matter affect the sound quality in their 99.9999999999999999% pure monocrystalline silver wires, and that's why they need to pay €10000 for it, because regular copper wires are for unsophisticated plebs. :LiveFuukaReaction: The only thing that changed is that a lot of people expect flac support and also support for large SD cards to accommodate those enormous files. Back in the day I would minmax my 4 GB MP3 with the most stripped .mp3 files, so I could keep more of them on the device. Right now I got this Echo Mini with 256 GB, and it can take only like 70% of my collection too (don't care tbh, larger SD cards are expensive af). @niobleoum @Zettour @rhyse I think the bigger issue with music players is instead of being spergs developing them around some microcontroller and a screen (think like the S1 MP3 players from "back in the day" that used a Z80) they just take some Android design, slap a logo and maybe some DAC on it, and call it a day. They're just Galaxy Players or iPod Touches with a new coat of paint but sold to audiophiles instead of that broke kid at school whose mom has a Verizon contract and bought him another Samsung Alias 2.
