       @Jes it's not that simple, power outlets (at least in sane countries) have a dedicated power switch, and are on the wallthe steam controller puck can be laying about anywhere, knocked off of things by kids, pets etc

       @gamingonlinux I do also think valve could've stuck in a resettable fuse on the connector, that could  just about completely resolve the issue, but but for now I guess you could stick the puck in a bag or maybe 3d print a magnetic cover for the pins.most magnetic cables aren't that generous though, so probably not unexpected valve didn't think about it.

       @gamingonlinux This charging puck could have been a standard component like USB (pick any type, C would be a good choice as there's a hole for one on the back already) plug and socket with significantly lower fire risk.
