@davidrevoy Very interesting and no doubt I'll have to have more Flatpak (I avoid it) and Wayland instead of X11. I do have Wayland on an alternate desktop.For now I'll stick with Mint, Mate & X11 (Jan 2017). Fortunately I've not had to worry about colour calibration for years, though my TVs, monitors & Nxtpaper tablets (set to sRGB and neutral balance) are all set to reasonably sane brightness, contrast and colour.I used XP as main OS 2002 to 2016 with a couple of months of Win7 at the end.

I have a Wacom PTH-860 around here on my test bench (Wacom Intuos Pro Large), I quickly connected it, via USB cable, plug and play on KDE Neon User Edition; 056a:0358 Wacom Co., Ltd PTH-860 [Intuos Pro (L)] , so certainly the medium version will work on it, unless your model is toasted? (is it possible?)The distro also mounted the built-in 'Wacom Start" pen drive, a 32MB built-in ROM as an external drive.

@mitsunee 🤣 For the jumps on the desk, and the chasing (I have four, so they sometime play together), I have no solution, except drinking quickly the coffee cup. Fortunately, they avoid my display tablet: it's super slippery and after they tested a slide or too on it with uncontrolled results, they tend to avoid it. The most difficult is for all the remote keyboard shortcut, and the top power off button on the top of my PC tower. They press it, by chance, never during 6 sec 😆

@aho Yes, I loved when 16:10 was more or less the norm around 2010 as an aspect ratio. Nowadays, I like my 24" 16:9 in quad HD (2560x1440px), I can screenrecord them and do video editing with keeping the same ratio, so it unify that at least.

@kaijucat The color calibration helps at having the same temperature, with the icc file. You can even set the same target luminosity (but for that, the full rig as to adopt the candela/m² of the darkest screen in the group.) On my photo, the XpPen wasn't calibrated and profiled yet, and in blue. On a photo later on the post ( https://www.davidrevoy.com/data/images/blog/2026/2026-05-22_kde-neon-guide/04_hardware_pc-setup.jpg ) you can see that I have unified tones on the four (but always difficult to catch with a photo: display view angles darken/bluish things) 1/2

@kaijucat 2/2 I really recomend getting a Colormunki smile of Xrite ( https://www.davidrevoy.com/data/images/blog/2026/2026-05-22_kde-neon-guide/07A_color-management_a_profiling.jpg ) I got mine on refurbished/second-hand market for around 40€. Many mac user were selling them for this price while it usually cost 5x that years ago because Xrite stopped making drivers for newer MacOS systems. But no problem on Linux :)

@tristen Yes, it's a possibility to use Plasma 6.3.6 with X11, but when I tested it, I had more issue with multiple screen, and when I checked the bug report, it was clear that with Plasma going to Wayland only (announced) no one would fix that. So, I preferred to skip this possibilities. That's why I said "X11 support starting to be neglected".

@davidrevoy the thing I'm worried about is that everything will be feeling small, for my current monitors are as high as most 27" monitors nowadays (they are just slightly wider), but going for 32 inch won't work as they too large where I have my monitors. Replacing with a wide screen either isn't wide enough to cover as much as the two monitors or it is a curved one and the curve make a straight line to look like it's not straight. Sure I can scale 200%, but then I know I have less view space

@evalhaik It's interesting, and the plan looks promising on the long term (having an immutable base, and flatpak/nix/appimage package on top). I still struggle to see how it can work to deploy a simple php local host webdev server, or doing CLI parrallal job on multiple image. But it sounds perfect for the user who wants something just like a Steamdeck: just using software on the top of an operating system. I'll keep an eye on it.

They're using some new called Kapsule instead which is like an evolution of the Distrobox concept if you've seen that before. Other posts on that blog use AI gen images which is something to note. There's also the Podman/Quadlet stuff for hosting services such as Jellyfin or whatever service.

My blog is back! I went into the logs to see the RSS code was the main culprit: huge and with 14K RSS bots hitting it over the last 10h.So, I simplified the RSS because, meh: I was sending the full content of the article with 10MB of pictures and the code was dynamically converting the markdown to html, then html to special char, *each time* 🫠 hm hm, no wonder...Now the website is back and up to speed, and the article received over 60K visitors, thank you!

I used your 2023 setup for my daughter's drawing laptop on a yoga but then upgraded to an x1 and with Xlibre + Debian 13 it all works, same with my desktop setups, no changes required really, just installed Xlibre and done. I saw in your article you had moving from X as a requirement ... so just curious what drives that decision? Mainstream support? Other? @davidrevoy great writeup and nice recommendations. As a guide for others, I would strongly discourage installing a samba server on every creative person's device. With the onslaught of hacked routers and iot vulnerabilities, you shouldn't add network access to a device unless you're sharing files on the network. It isn't needed for local php development. I'd encourage a note that if you aren't doing local php development, skip apache for the same reason.

The computer graphic scene is so large and with deep expertize... game dev, 3D art, movie editing, optic science and at multiple level too (hobby, learning, professional).Also many users enjoys having an OS allowing them to do a bit of everything on their computer: music, video editing, art, code, writing and don't crash on a limit if they start to get hyper specialized in one area. 1/2

@davidrevoy Im curious, did you ever considered other “stable” alternatives like OpenSuse Leap or AlmaLinux/Rocky Linux? For a while now (except for that stupid lapsus in which I decided to try Testing last week) I’ve been more and more inline with the idea that old software will give me less “surprises” And that smaller projects may provide a better “long term” investment in the end… (1/2)

@davidrevoy For example I stopped using KDE plasma, not because it was bad. It is actually pretty good. But every decision made in the project that goes against my own interests is harder to overcome/workaround than let’s say on something like DWM or OpenBox It does have a huge upfront investement though but I think it was worth it (2/2)

@Juankprada Yes for OpenSuse, used it 10y ago for maybe 1 month, I appreciated their home made custom settings, but disliked the focus on server ("uptime funk" era and ewww the communication of Lunduke).I then went to Arch at that time. Never tried Alma or Rocky. I guess they suffer the same situation than in Debian: frozen right withing what I call the "death valley" 2023~2026 ; when X11 got more bugs unfixed, and Wayland isn't ready enough. (1/2)

@Juankprada By the way, I should probably update my article with a graphic representation of this 'death valley' 😆 Joke aside, in the Wayland era, the D.E. controls the color management and the tablet handling. (before on X11, we had CLI tools for that, that could work on all distro, not anymore). That's why now the choice of D.E. and its version is far more important than the choice of distro, imo. The 26.04LTS has a descent Plasma version. Maybe a sweat LTS ecosystem once Snap removed (2/2)

@davidrevoy I switched to Xlibre for those reasons. I get why you may not want to go there. So I understand. If I may say something about it, not with the aim of convincing you of changing your mind about it though; there has always been questionable people from all sides of the political spectrum involved in all parts of the Linux ecosystem. I made peace with that some time ago as I would end up not using Linux if I chose to avoid certain contributors. (1/2)

@davidrevoy You know, that’s one of the reasons I am not so happy about the whole Wayland situation. I don’t really care about the architectural choices except for the fact that I want things to work. But with Wayland I won’t be able to use the Desktop environment (or WM) I want. I would have to stick to Plasma if I want to have all the feature needed for my art process (not a bad DE by any means but not my choice) (1/2)

@Juankprada I agree: the core design choice makes everything less modular on Wayland than X11 for the end user, and the alternative D.E./Windows Manager on Wayland are already no-go territory for me because of that. There is only GNOME and Plasma (Sway has a CLI tool for tablet, but very limited). To contrast, I remember my days on Arch+Awesome WM with no problem for the tablet support and color management thanks to X11 xsetwacom and argyll. It wasn't user friendly (many scripts) but possible.

@davidrevoy I think that’s how I live my live now among many scripts. I created menus for most of them which are a shortcut away (using Dmenu) so I overcame that. I wouldn’t mind porting everything I’ve done to Wayland if I had the chance to use it. But it will just not work 🤷

@mica I adopted a PluXML CMS more than 20 years ago so I have a biais. I love its design: flat database (xml files) + php/gd : minimalistic. The project is still maintained, and mine is very modified (all reported on my blog or on the official forum) to use markdown mainly. But I had to abandon the comment system; and tweak it a lot to adapt it. The Php code is great, and easy to read. I learnt a lot thanks to it, but I can't recommend it to modern blogger.

@kimael Hey, see how Linux Mint devs managed this issue for a basic feature for drawing tablet I opened in 2014 and it wasn't addressed and even more, closed totally recently: https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon-control-center/issues/76 They just don't care about drawing tablet and color management and just inherit whatever GNOME does in this area when they are not breaking it, afaik. So, while I enjoy it on my living room PC for my guest, on PC of family, and my media center, it has real flaw regarding my job. ¯\(ツ)/¯

@davidrevoy the complicated part is only when you want to tune it.It is actually easy to install when you use defaults for everything and the default binary kernel.Just "click" and wait while it compiles ;)And you could (or not) tune it later (no need to "re-install from scratch" then, only wait while it re-compiles :)Maybe I can help if necessary?

@kimael No problem, at Linux Mint 19, the KDE edition was officially discontinued (with a EOL around 2020); they felt it was a duplicate effort with Kubuntu around and KDE Neon User Edition. About your friend: yes, it is still possible to install on the top of the xcfce or cinnamon edition manually a KDE desktop on top of Mint; but also a lot of post cleaning and adjustment to get a clean result.

@kimael As I said, I already tried. And it didn't meet my user friendly requirement. But I understand the appeal of Gentoo when it come to offering the full DIY kit for compiling anything and the level of thin granularity when it comes to to set things exactly as one wants. @teabynameteabynature Thank you for testing and for your feedback! The live USB method is a good idea; you'll immediately see if your tablet is supported or not this way. (also, if your tablet model has a driver on https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libevdev/udev-hid-bpf/-/releases , this one can be installed quickly with the ./install.sh bash script on top of the live-USB session. Just unplug/replug the device after installing the udev-hid-bpf; and you'll see if the tablet works correctly, very convenient for testing)

@ububu True, but I found it counter Intuitive on my career that, for Krita , for example, an i3 with powerful Ghz cores will perform better than i7 with smaller Ghz power.
