       @ariadne One of my first jobs with a master's was in a professional shop surrounded by people in their 50s who swore continuously. They were also all environmentalists, so maybe that was related

       @ariadne I feel like I always heard that from adults who thought they were smarter than they really were, and overconfident in a small model of the world.Of course, the version I always heard was "saying something using profanity shows a lack of the education to say it properly." You can only believe this if your mental model of communication is small enough to exclude tone. It's valuable to know the professional way to tell someone to eat shit, but it's not going to have the intentional rudeness, and explicit unwillingness to waste effort on a troll, that you get from just telling someone directly to eat shit.

       @MaddieM4 the adult who told me that- was a journalism professor- cheated on her husband with a college football coach- alienated her child because of said decision- blames the fact that her child no longer talks to her on his PTSD from surviving the 9/11 attacks despite it having nothing to do with itmeanwhile I don't talk to these people anymore.  they aren't worth my time.

       @ariadne hands down, some of the smartest people I've ever worked with would make a sailor blush. While I'm not as smart as a lot of people I work with, I do have an advanced degree in profanity.
