       my guilty pleasure with LLMs is seeing where their knowledge actually ends. the knowledge cutoff date doesn't truly represent the fuzzy, hazy, uneven edge of what an LLM remembers

       some models are "aware" of this memory haze at the cutoff line because of the anti-hallucination hammered in during post-training. claude is very reluctant to answer questions at its own knowledge cutoff, and you need to tell it's really okay to speculateand it really speculates

       @halva I found it's possible to figure out the actual cutoff date by asking them what the current versions of some software. To Linux and Firefox it gives 2024 era versions.
