I think to a degree our society has also failed a lot of people. When both parents are working, they don't have the energy to come home and then teach their kids to cook, even if they themselves are doing it.

the whole thing parents were sold for the two-working-parents thing was that "society" would do the job of raising their kids.And maybe at some point teachers did care about their students. But as soon as teachers unions became massive vote schemes, that disappeared.

Consider too that for a lot of families “cooking“ was following the directions on the side of the Hamburger Helper box. This crisis didn’t happen overnight.

Home economics for the girls and shop for the boys. We had multiple classrooms set up for each and we weren't a particularly large school. This was decades ago.

I had "home ec" in the 90s, but it was useless. I had already taught myself how to cook and sew out of necessity, and it was basically "follow instruction, receive grade". I was barred from all technical electives (computers, typing, wood/metal/auto shop, electronics) for opting out of an AP program that was literally extra work from the same material as the basic classes. Instead of doing the odd-numbered problems in algebra, do ALL of them, and neatly write your "work" on a separate sheet of paper, because cannot possibly do complex equations in your head. English was similarly retarded, as they demanded an "essay answer" (minimum five sentence paragraph) for every question in a chapter, even if the answer was simply a character's name.They were so upset that I didn't want to spend five hours after school doing busywork that they erased all of the credits I had earned and barred me from the office when I protested.

I went into detail at the end of my first year of HS, explaining that I wasn't learning advanced material, or moving through the curriculum any faster than the basic classes, who used the same textbooks, and had far less in-class and home work. They had tried to dismiss my complaint, and I told them that as mathematics is formulaic, it is completely stupid to think that you will learn better by solving 40 problems instead of 15-20, and that neatly "showing your work" was similarly dumb, as nobody in the class had their own scientific calculators to "cheat" at home.For various reasons, I had nobody to back me up or advocate for me, so I was fuck out of luck. This was before computer ownership was common, never mind social networking existing in any capacity besides the corkboard at the laundromat.

You had stupid lazy teachers.If my students have any aptitude and sincere interest I start teaching material one or two grades ahead. And focus more on the concepts than the mechanical calculations. One of my favourites is showing students who were taught to use the quadratic formula for finding roots in the usual rote drill and kill method that it's actually an algebraic version of completing the square. Another mindless mechanical calculation they are taught. The ones that see these are directly connected, its like seeing a light bulb light up. The ancient proof that the square root of two is irrational is another.Unfortunately good teachers are quite rare. I was very lucky growing up.

One of my best teachers was my solid state electronics professor who told everybody that they could change their majors to HVAC or phlebotomy without having to re-test or pay anything extra on the first day, as even back in the early 2000s, there were no jobs in electronic engineering in the US. Infinite jeet works was common even then.

i dunno if people know this, but having a multi dish meal for every meal isn't exactly common, even my grandma would make lunch, it would be sammiches maybe chili and crackers but it wouldn't be anythign fancy, sometimes she just spread some pimento cheese spread on some bread and served it with potato chips, like she'd prepare it so nobody else did, but only dinner was something that had effort put into it most of the time.

i just mean something that's quick to put together and doesn't much effort, grnadma made all kinds of wonderful meals with green beans meat and potatoes and other stuff for dinner all the time, but she wouldn't cook a big lunch ever, unless it were a holiday cuz we eat thanksgiving and christmas meals for lunch so it was daylight when everyone went home when she was still around, she'd cook bacon almost daily for grandpa i usually ate creeal.

@sickburnbro Cooking is not that hard. If you are short on time, crockpots are a great way to make a meal with little effort. Cooking a large amount of food at once and eating it as leftovers days after also saves a lot of time.Boo hoo if you complain that "I don't like eating the same thing every day. I NEED VARIETY!" No you don't.

@sickburnbro It does not help that food is more expensive in general (not just eating out). But the food getting more expensive makes time and money saving efforts even more important. You as an individual are not to blame for the current status of food prices getting more expensive. You can be mad at the people responsible. But being mad will not solve the problem of how you will be able to afford to eat.
